Addressing racial inequality and its effects on vaccination rate: A trial comparing a pharmacist and peer educational program (MOTIVATE) in diverse older adults
CONCLUSIONS: Both interventions significantly improved knowledge and trust toward vaccination and retained their effect 1 month after the program. The 2 effective community-based education models should be expanded to ensure timely and trusted information is available to educate older adults about vaccine-preventable diseases. Further research is encouraged to assess the long-term cost-effectiveness of these models' utilization on a larger scale. DISCLOSURES: Dr Schafer is an employee of Merck; however, at the time of the project, he was a professor at Thomas Jefferson University. The other authors have no conflicts of int...

T4 bacteriophage nanoparticles engineered through CRISPR provide a versatile platform for rapid development of flu mucosal vaccines
Antiviral Res. 2023 Jul 27:105688. doi: 10.1016/j.antiviral.2023.105688. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVaccines that trigger mucosal immune responses at the entry portals of pathogens are highly desired. Here, we showed that antigen-decorated nanoparticle generated through CRISPR engineering of T4 bacteriophage can serve as a universal platform for the rapid development of mucosal vaccines. Insertion of Flu viral M2e into phage T4 genome through fusion to Soc (Small Outer Capsid protein) generated a recombinant phage, and the Soc-M2e proteins self-assembled onto phage capsids to form 3M2e-T4 nanoparticles during propagatio...

Viral-vectored respiratory mucosal vaccine strategies
Curr Opin Immunol. 2023 Jul 25;84:102370. doi: 10.1016/j.coi.2023.102370. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIncreasing global concerns of pandemic respiratory viruses highlight the importance of developing optimal vaccination strategies that encompass vaccine platform, delivery route, and regimens. The decades-long effort to develop vaccines to combat respiratory infections such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and tuberculosis has met with challenges, including the inability of systemically administered vaccines to induce respiratory mucosal (RM) immunity. In this regard, ample preclinical and available clinical stu...

Effectiveness of hospital-based strategies for improving childhood immunization coverage: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Some interventions that provide vaccination to children accessing hospitals improved vaccine coverage; however, the baseline coverage level of the population, as well as implementation strategies used impact success. There is limited evidence that interventions promoting vaccination after hospital discharge are more successful if they are tailored to the individual.PMID:37500415 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.036
