Drought in the Semiarid Region of Brazil: Exposure, Vulnerabilities and Health Impacts from the Perspectives of Local Actors
Conclusion The results obtained from this research shows, in general, the fragility in the social and political infrastructure necessary to improve the living conditions of populations, particularly those that depend on family agriculture in drought prone areas. The conditions of social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities presented in the region can be amplified by the drought process, and can aggravate the impacts resulting drought events, thus disadvantaging the population of this region, as shown in the Fig. 1. The general perception of the interviewees of the health sector shows an agreement with what is found...

Sickle cell diseases: What can nuclear medicine offer?
Authors: Niccoli Asabella A, Altini C, Nappi AG, Lavelli V, Ferrari C, Marzullo A, Loiodice A, Rubini G Abstract Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the best known haemoglobinopathy, caused by a mutation substituting valina for glutamic acid at position 6 of the beta-globin chain of adult hemoglobin A, resulting in hemoglobin S (HbS). The homozygous HbS disease (HbSS), an autosomal recessive disorder, is the most common form and the Mediterranean area, along with sub-Saharian African and India, have the highest prevalence (1%-15%). In particular, Sicily with a prevalence of 2%-5%, is among the most interested regions. How...

The Dengue Dance?
Discussion Dengue is an important arboviral infection that affects about 40% of the world population. It is found mainly in topical and subtropical areas of the world mainly in developing countries but it range is spreading including the United States. A review of common arboviruses can be found here. It is a flaviavirus with 4 distinct serotypes named DENV-1 through DENV-4 and is spread by A. aegypti a day biting mosquito. Infection with one serotype confers immunity to that serotype but not the others. It does offer some protection for cross-infection but this only lasts a few months. Incubation period is 3-14 days with ...

Case Report: A Rare Case of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Associated with Epididymo-Orchitis.
Abstract Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an acute infectious disease that affects multiple organ systems and is characterized by extensive ecchymosis, internal hemorrhage, and hepatic dysfunction. The reported case fatality rate varies between 8% and 80%. It is frequently transmitted by Hyalomma ticks, which are endemic in the Northeast Anatolia region of Turkey in spring and summer. Our patient presented from an endemic area with fever, malaise, joint pain, and scrotal pain following a tick bite, and real-time PCR analysis of venous blood was positive for CCHF. Based on Doppler ultrasound performed beca...

Gastrointestinal Talaromyces marneffei infection in a patient with AIDS: A case report and systematic review
Talaromyces marneffei is a thermally dimorphic fungus that affects multiple organs and frequently invades immunocompromised individuals. However, only a few studies have reported the presence of intestinal infection associated with T. marneffei. Herein, we reported a case of intestinal T. marneffei infection in a man who complained of a 1-month history of intermittent fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The result of the human immunodeficiency virus antibody test was positive. Periodic acid-Schiff and Gomorrah’s methylamine silver staining of the intestinal biopsy tissue revealed T. marneffei infection. Fortunately, the...
