Ileo-ileal knot: a rare case of acute strangulated intestinal obstruction.
Authors: Taniguchi K, Iida R, Watanabe T, Nitta M, Tomioka M, Uchiyama K, Takasu A Abstract Strangulated intestinal obstruction is one of the most common types of acute abdomen and requires urgent surgical treatment. Herein, we report a very rare case of strangulated intestinal obstruction caused by an ileo-ileal knot. An 80-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with suspicion of strangulation ileus and underwent emergency laparotomy after investigation by exploratory single-port laparoscopy. During surgery, a small bowel gangrene caused by an ileo-ileal knot was found. The gangrenous segment was resected, an...

Laparoscopic and open liver resection - a literature review with meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic resection of liver yields complications rates comparable to open resection, but the results are based on low quality evidence from nonrandomised studies. PMID: 28507565 [PubMed]

Efficacy of Palonosetron vs. Ramosetron for the Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis discovered no definite difference in PONV prevention between the two drugs. The significant findings that were seen in different time epochs and subgroup analyses should be confirmed in future RCTs. PMID: 28541001 [PubMed - in process]

Computer scientists repurpose laparoscopy video for medical training
(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Researchers at MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a new system that can efficiently search through hundreds of hours of video for events and visual features that correspond to a few training examples. In work they presented at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation this month, the researchers trained their system to recognize different stages of an operation, such as biopsy, tissue removal, stapling, and wound cleansing.

Endometriosis with an aberrant immunophenotype: Challenging differential diagnosis of glandular lesions in the pelvic lymph nodes.
CONCLUSIONS: This type of aberrant of the endometriotic gland immunophenotype has never been presented in the scientific literature before. This finding plays a significant role from the pathology standpoint and, perhaps more importantly, from the clinical standpoint. An asymptomatic patient with a correct diagnosis of lymph node endometriosis did not undergo excessive treatment for false positive diagnosis of metastatic cervical adenocarcinoma. Evaluation of the impact of preoperative education in ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A prospective, double-blind randomized trial.
CONCLUSIONS: We did not find differences due to intensive preoperative education. However, we think that a correct information protocol should be integrated into the patient's preoperative preparation. Registered in ISRCTN number ISRCTN83787412. PMID: 29224843 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Traumatic bicycle handlebar hernia in children: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Traumatic abdominal wall hernia can be visualized by ultrasonography, but CT scan is often used as the final diagnostic modality because of the risk of associated intra-abdominal injuries. Open surgical repair in layers or laparoscopic suturing during diagnostic laparoscopy may be appropriate in managing traumatic abdominal wall hernias in children. Non-surgical management has been described, but available data do not support a general recommendation for a non-surgical approach. PMID: 29301610 [PubMed - in process]

Augmented reality in dentistry: a current perspective.
Abstract Augmentation reality technology offers virtual information in addition to that of the real environment and thus opens new possibilities in various fields. The medical applications of augmentation reality are generally concentrated on surgery types, including neurosurgery, laparoscopic surgery and plastic surgery. Augmentation reality technology is also widely used in medical education and training. In dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is the primary area of use, where dental implant placement and orthognathic surgery are the most frequent applications. Recent technological advancements are enablin...

Minimally invasive management of hepatic cysts: indications and complications.
CONCLUSIONS: The application of the various minimally invasive approaches, as well as their indication and complications, depend on the type of the cystic lesion, its size and its position in the liver. Percutaneous drainage is mostly used in simple cysts, hydatid cysts, pyogenic abscesses and bilomas. Laparoscopic fenestration is mostly used in simple cysts and polycystic liver disease. Finally, laparoscopic hepatectomy is mostly used in polycystic liver disease, hydatid cysts, and cystadenomas. PMID: 29565498 [PubMed - in process]

Bevacizumab-induced intestinal perforation in a patient with inoperable breast cancer: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionsWe report a very rare and valuable case. This case suggests that the risk of gastrointestinal perforation must be considered in a case of bevacizumab administration, and it is necessary to determine carefully the patient administered bevacizumab, regardless of the type of cancer.

Addition of a Scripted Pre-operative Patient Education Module to an Existing ERAS Pathway Further Reduces Length of Stay
ConclusionsScripted patient education modules may shorten length of stays and postoperative complications, even when added to an already existing ERAS bundle, which may translate into significant hospital cost savings.

Comparison of metabolic outcomes in patients undergoing laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus sleeve gastrectomy - a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
CONCLUSION: Based on this meta-analysis, RYGB is more effective than SG in improving weight loss and short- and mid-term glycaemic and lipid metabolism control in patients with and without T2DM. Therefore, unless contraindicated, RYGB should be the first choice to treat patients with obesity and T2DM and/or dyslipidaemia. PMID: 30035801 [PubMed - in process]
