Bariatric surgery and alcohol and substance abuse disorder: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Bariatric surgery is the best treatment for obesity and its complications. The evidence reviewed suggests that it correlates with a modest but consistent increase in the prevalence of abuse of alcohol and other substances. Medical teams who treat bariatric patients must be informed about this eventuality for its timely prevention, diagnosis and treatment.PMID:33933262 | DOI:10.1016/j.ciresp.2021.03.006 (Source: Cirugia eEspanola)

Intraoperative indocyanine green (ICG) angiography of the parathyroids glands in prediction of post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia: Diagnostic accuracy of the ICG score 2 versus the 4-ICG score
CONCLUSIONS: Identification of single-gland ICG score of 2 has a higher diagnostic accuracy than 4-ICG sum score to predict immediate hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy.PMID:33931200 | DOI:10.1016/j.ciresp.2021.03.017 (Source: Cirugia eEspanola)

Is percutaneous cholecystostomy safe and effective in acute cholecystitis? Analysis of adverse effects associated with the technique
CONCLUSION: We consider percutaneous cholecystostomy as a safe and effective technique because it is associated with a low incidence of morbidity and mortality, and it should be considered as a bridge or definitive alternative in those patients who do not receive urgent cholecystectomy after failure of conservative antibiotic treatment.PMID:33902894 | DOI:10.1016/j.ciresp.2021.03.012 (Source: Cirugia eEspanola)

Despite advances in diagnostic modalities and treatment options, five-year survival rates are below 20%. Esophagectomy with extended lymph node dissection is the mainstay of treatment. More than 50% of patients experience recurrence within 1-3 years postoperatively. Recurrent disease may present locoregionally at the site of anastomosis or as recurrence through lymphatic spread in lymph node basins, as hematogenic metastasis, or ...

Comparison of different methods to manage supralevator rectal opening in anal fistulas: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The supralevator rectal opening (SRO) heals well irrespective of the method utilized. Thus, proper management of the primary opening at the dentate line holds the key to fistula healing and SRO is perhaps not much responsible for persistence of the fistula.
