All sex steroids are made intracellularly in peripheral tissues by the mechanisms of intracrinology after menopause
Publication date: January 2015 Source:The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Volume 145 Author(s): Fernand Labrie Following the arrest of estradiol secretion by the ovaries at menopause, all estrogens and all androgens in postmenopausal women are made locally in peripheral target tissues according to the physiological mechanisms of intracrinology. The locally made sex steroids exert their action and are inactivated intracellularly without biologically significant release of the active sex steroids in the circulation. The level of expression of the steroid-forming and steroid-inactivating enzymes is sp...

Strategies to improve the outcomes of assisted reproduction in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionThere is low to moderate quality evidence suggesting that antagonist protocols are preferable to agonist ones, because they reduce the incidence of OHSS without interfering with clinical pregnancy and live birth for women with PCOS. Additionally there is low quality evidence pointing a benefit for metformin supplementation on clinical pregnancy and live birth; and that the ovulation induction and estradiol seems to be equally effective for endometrial preparation before frozen embryo transfer for women with PCOS. For all other interventions, the quality of the evidence is of very low quality, not allowing any meaningful conclusions.

Estrogen-based hormone therapy in women with primary ovarian insufficiency: a systematic review
ConclusionsEvidence supporting bone and cardiovascular benefits of HT in women with POI is limited by high risk of bias, reliance on surrogate outcomes, and heterogeneity of trials regarding the formulation, dose, route of administration, and regimen of HT. Further research addressing patient important outcomes such as fractures, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality are crucial to optimize benefits of this therapy.

Independent and Combined Effects of Antioxidant Supplementation and Circuit Resistance Training on Selected Adipokines in Postmenopausal Women
In conclusion, our findings suggest CRT is a critical intervention element that can significantly modulate circulating levels of adipokines. Interestingly, these effects were intensified when Zataria Multiflora supplementation added to CRT regimen, whereas ZM alone had little effects on measured adipokines. This implies that the beneficial effects of CRT on circulating levels of adipokines could be amplified with simultaneous intake of ZM; that is, they act synergistically. Consequently, CRT alone or its combination with ZM could be considered by researchers and health practitioners as a non-pharmacologic means to modulate...

Motivational increase of androgens and behavior by infant distress calls in highly responsive common marmoset fathers, Callithrix jacchus
Horm Behav. 2022 Mar 30;142:105162. doi: 10.1016/j.yhbeh.2022.105162. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCommon marmoset fathers are highly involved in care of their infants. However, variability exists in their response to infant behavior even in paternally experienced fathers. Using infant distress cries as a motivation test, we investigated: 1. the differences in paternally experienced fathers' motivation to search for the infant vocalization stimuli; 2. the relationship between a father's motivation to search for the source of the infant cries and testosterone levels; and 3. if there is a rapid steroidogenesis pathway leadi...

Interventions to prevent or treat heavy menstrual bleeding or pain associated with intrauterine-device use
CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this review should be interpreted with caution due to low- and very low-certainty evidence. Included trials were limited; the majority of the evidence was derived from single trials with few participants. Further research requires larger trials and improved trial reporting. The use of vitamin B1 and mefenamic acid to treat heavy menstruation and tolfenamic acid to prevent heavy menstruation associated with Cu IUD should be investigated. More trials are needed to generate evidence for the treatment and prevention of heavy and painful menstruation associated with LNG IUD.PMID:36017945 | DOI:10.1002...

Chemopreventive and anti-tumor potential of vitamin E in preclinical breast cancer studies: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, vitamin E isoforms, isolated or associated, showed antitumor and chemopreventive activity. However, due to studies heterogeneity, there is a need for further analysis to establish dose, form, supplementation time and breast cancer stage.PMID:36657931 | DOI:10.1016/j.clnesp.2022.11.001

Impact of the prostaglandin synthase-2 inhibitor celecoxib on ovulation and luteal events in women
Conclusions: Although treatment with celecoxib before or after the LH surge increases the rate of ovulatory dysfunction, most women ovulate normally. Thus, this selective COX2 inhibitor appears to be of limited usefulness as a potential emergency contraceptive.

EAA clinical practice guidelines —gynecomastia evaluation and management
ConclusionsThe purpose of GM assessment should be the detection of underlying pathological conditions, reversible causes (administration/abuse of aggravating substances), and the discrimination from other breast lumps, particularly breast cancer. Assessment should comprise a thorough medical history and physical examination of the breast and genitalia (including testicular ultrasound). A set of laboratory investigations may integrate the evaluation: testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), sex hormone ‐binding globulin (SHBG), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), pro...

Prostate Cancer Risk and DNA Methylation Signatures in Aging Rats following Developmental BPA Exposure: A Dose –Response Analysis
Conclusions: Developmental BPA exposures heighten prostate cancer susceptibility in a complex dose- and lobe-specific manner. Importantly, elevated carcinogenic risk is found at doses that yield undetectable serum free BPA. Dose-specific epigenetic modifications of selected genes provide a mechanistic framework that may connect early-life BPA to later-life predisposition to prostate carcinogenesis. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1050 Received: 1 September 2016 Revised: 13 January 2017 Accepted: 19 January 2017 Published: 11 July 2017 Address correspondence to G.S. Autoimmune Disease in Women: Endocrine Transition and Risk Across the Lifespan
Conclusion Autoimmune disease states show strong associations with endocrinological changes in human and animal studies. There is clear evidence for the role of sex steroids in the immune disturbances that result in autoimmune diseases (Figure 2). The majority of women who pass through the different endocrinological transition states do not succumb to autoimmune diseases. FIGURE 2 Figure 2. Factors that contribute to increased incidence and prevalence of autoimmunity in women. In women (46XX) with genetic susceptibility to autoimmune states, external environmental stimuli affect modifying factors as well as endo...

CONCLUSIONS: Active and passive smoking may be an important contributor to reproductive health issues and deserves a greater focus in health education programs directed towards women of reproductive age.PMID:34855194 | DOI:10.5603/EP.a2021.0097
