Reduction in Acute Stroke Admissions during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Data from a National Stroke Registry
Conclusion: The marked decrease in admissions for acute stroke and TIA, occurring at a time of a relatively low burden of COVID-19, is of great concern. Public awareness campaigns are needed as patients reluctant to seek urgent stroke care are deprived of lifesaving procedures and secondary prevention treatments.Neuroepidemiology

Acute ischemic stroke in a pediatric patient with known exposure to COVID-19 and positive serology
Neurologic manifestations of COVID-19 in pediatrics are not well understood. Recently, Kaur et al. reported a child with transverse myelitis and McAbee et al. described a child with seizures and encephalitis, in the setting of an acute COVID-19 infection.1,2 Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and focal cerebral arteriopathy have also been reported.3

Stroke and bleeding risks in patients with atrial fibrillation treated with reduced apixaban dose: a real life study.
Abstract Our objective was to assess the association between reduced apixaban dose and two outcomes: ischemic stroke/systemic embolism (SE) and major bleeding. We performed a retrospective cohort study within the database of the largest healthcare provider in Israel. We identified all patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, who started apixaban treatment between 2013 and 2017. Apixaban users were classified into three dosing regimen groups based on their renal function, age and weight: standard dose (5 mg bid), adjusted reduced dose (2.5 mg bid), and underdosing (2.5 mg bid). Patients were followed through 2...

Mechanical Thrombectomy in Acute Ischemic Stroke Using a  Manually Expandable Stent Retriever (Tigertriever) : Preliminary Single Center Experience.
CONCLUSION: The Tigertriever offers a safe and effective treatment option in ischemic stroke due to LVOs with reperfusion rates and a safety profile similar to alternative devices. The Tigertriever is a promising bail-out tool in complex cases. Its role as a first line device has to be evaluated in further prospective studies. PMID: 32529306 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

High ambient temperature in summer and risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack: A national study in Israel.
CONCLUSIONS: High ambient temperature may be linked to increased risk of cerebrovascular events in subsequent days. However, relief from the heat during the night may attenuate this risk. PMID: 32474306 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Use of oral anticoagulation therapy in the first 3 months after the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in Israel: a population ‐based study
ConclusionIn this real world, population ‐based cohort of patients with newly diagnosed AF, we found a lower than expected rate of OAC prescription within 3 months of diagnosis but an encouraging increase in OAC purchasing over time. Use of NOACs has risen exponentially in only a few years, accounting for a greater pool of AF patients be ing prescribed an OAC.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The Use of Embolic Protection Devices During Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.
Authors: Shiyovich A, Kornowski R Abstract BACKGROUND: Aortic stenosis (AS) is a common valvular pathology and is increasing in prevalence. Severe symptomatic AS is associated with serious outcomes if left untreated. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an innovative modality, which has revolutionized the treatment of AS. With growing experience and technological upgrades, TAVI has become a valid alternative to surgical valve replacement. However, TAVI is associates with increase non-negligible risks of mortality, stroke, physical disability, and healthcare expenditures. Furthermore, imaging modalities...

Nerve stimulation could provide new treatment option for most common type of stroke
Research led by a UCLA scientist found that a new nerve stimulation therapy to increase blood flow could help patients with the most common type of stroke up to 24 hours after onset.A study of 1,000 patients found evidence that the technique, called active nerve cell cluster stimulation, reduced the patients ’ degree of disability three months after they suffered an acute cortical ischemic stroke, which affects the surface of the brain.Dr. Jeffrey Saver, director of theUCLA Comprehensive Stroke Center, was the co-principal investigator of the study, which was conducted at 73 medical centers in 18 countries.“We believe ...

Modifiable Lifestyle Factors and Cognitive Function in Older People: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study
Conclusions: Lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, sleep, and social activity appear to be associated with cognitive function among older people. Physical activity and appropriate durations of sleep and conversation are important for cognitive function. Introduction Dementia is a major public health issue worldwide, with a serious burden for patients, caregivers, and society, as well as substantial economic impacts (1). Although the prevalence of late-life cognitive impairment and dementia are expected to increase in future, effective disease-modifying treatments are currently unavailable. Therefore, unders...

Inhibition of endothelial Progenitor Cells Inhibition in the first 24 hours of an Acute Ischemic Cerebrovascular Event.
Authors: Blum A, Pastukh N, Sirchan R, Blum N, Chernikoff L, Vaispapir V Abstract BACKGROUND: Endothelial progenitor cells may have a role in ongoing endothelial repair. Impaired mobilization or depletion of these cells may contribute to progression of vascular disease. Our hypothesis was that endothelial progenitor cells would be suppressed in patients with acute cerebrovascular event based on our previous study that found severe endothelial dysfunction in those patients. OBJECTIVES: To study the ability of patients with acute stroke to build colonies of endothelial progenitor cells. METHODS: We studied th...
