Inhibition of STIM1 alleviates high glucose-induced proliferation and fibrosis by inducing autophagy in mesangial cells
In this study, we investigated the role of STIM1 in the proliferation and fibrosis in high glucose (HG)-induced HBZY-1 cells. We found that the expression of STIM1 was increased in renal tissues of diabetic rat and HBZY-1 cells stimulated by HG. Downregulation of STIM1-mediated SOCE suppressed hyperglycemic cell proliferation and fibrosis by activating autophagy. In addition, the inhibitory effect of downregulating STIM1 on cells was blocked by autophagy inhibitor Bafilomycin A1 (BafA1). Moreover, this experiment also showed that STIM1 regulated autophagy, cell proliferation and fibrosis via PI3K/AKT/mTOR signal pathway. T...

Prevalence, Clinical Profiles, and Prognosis of Stiff-Person Syndrome in a Japanese Nationwide Survey
This study provides the current epidemiologic and clinical status of SPS in Japan. The symptom onset to the diagnosis of SPS was longer in patients with high-titer GAD65 antibodies than in those with low-titer GAD65 antibodies. The outcome of patients with SPS was generally favorable, but more aggressive immunotherapies are necessary for GAD65-positive patients with SPS.

Prevalence of diagnosed depression, anxiety, and ADHD among youth with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus
We examined the prevalence of diagnosed depression, anxiety, and ADHD among youth by diabetes type, insurance type, and race/ethnicity. These mental disorders were more prevalent among youth with diabetes, particularly those with type 2 diabetes, with non-Hispanic White youth with Medicaid and diabetes having a higher prevalence than other races/ethnicities.

Mucormycosis: update on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment
Curr Opin Infect Dis. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1097/QCO.0000000000000976. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mucormycosis (MCR) is a common opportunistic mold infection, and Mucorales were recently designated by WHO as priority pathogens. The interest in this infection has risen significantly since the major outbreak of MCR in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in India. Herein, we summarize recently (last 24 months) published information regarding clinical aspects of MCR.RECENT FINDINGS: The disease remains protean in its clinical presentation, difficult to diagnose, and challenging to treat. In ...

Construction, evaluation, and AOP framework-based application of the EpPRS as a genetic surrogate for assessing environmental pollutants
CONCLUSIONS: EpPRSs can serve as a proxy for assessing pollutant internal exposure. The application of the EpPRS to disease risk assessment can reveal the toxic pathway and mode of action linking exposure and disease in detail, providing a basis for the development of environmental pollutant control strategies.PMID:37734146 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2023.108202

A population-based study on hyperinsulinaemia and arterial stiffness in men with and without abdominal aortic aneurysm
CONCLUSION: In this population-based study hyperinsulinaemia as a marker of insulin resistance, but not hyperglycaemia or aortic stiffness, was associated with AAA and abdominal aortic diameter in 65-year-old men.PMID:37731907 | PMC:PMC10508446 | DOI:10.1097/XCE.0000000000000290

Efficacy and Safety of Esaxerenone in Hypertensive Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Undergoing Treatment with Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter  2 Inhibitors (EAGLE-DH)
CONCLUSION: Esaxerenone effectively lowered BP, was safe, and showed renoprotective effects in hypertensive patients with diabetes mellitus receiving treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors. Esaxerenone and SGLT2 inhibitors did not interfere with either drug's efficacy and may reduce the frequency of serum potassium elevations, suggesting they are a compatible combination.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: jRCTs031200273.PMID:37733211 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-023-02633-8

Prevention of cardiovascular disease in young adults: Focus on gender differences. A collaborative review from the EAS Young Fellows
Atherosclerosis. 2023 Sep 19:117272. doi: 10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.117272. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA steady rise in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality has been observed in young adults within the last decades. This trend corresponds to an increasing prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2 among young adults living in developed countries. Moreover, age-specific risk factors, such as substance abuse, contraceptive medication, and pregnancy-related diseases also correlate with an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we discus...

Gut microbiota regulation of inflammatory cytokines and microRNAs in diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12754-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has a major comorbidity known as diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD). Studies have demonstrated that the gut microbiota is crucial in mediating the cognitive abnormalities that occur in diabetic individuals. Additionally, changes in dietary fatty acid intake levels, inflammatory cytokines, and microRNAs (miRs) have an effect on cognitive performance. However, further studies are needed to identify the link between gut microbiota and cognition in T2DM patients and the role that ...

Weight gain following a change from Home Parenteral Nutrition to Intravenous Fluids only
Patient A, a 66 year old female was admitted to hospital with a prolapsed bowel leading to a small bowel resection and end ileostomy. She had a history of steroid induced diabetes mellitus and chronically infected leg ulcers. Repeated admissions to hospital with a high output ileostomy due to infections deranged electrolytes and weight loss resulted in commencement of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) under the care of the intestinal failure team.
