Evaluation of medical radiation exposures in Tuscany
Introduction: Radiations used in medical applications are the major source of artificial radiation exposing the population of developed countries. Although the use of ionizing radiations in medicine has originated undeniable health benefits, this has also led to the necessity of monitoring potentially harmful effects produced by radiations used for diagnostic purposes. These effects are essentially stochastic. The main side effect produced by radiation is the induction of cancers (solid tumors and leukemia) even after several years from the exposure.

URMC Investigating New Parkinson's Drug
The University of Rochester Medical Center Clinical Trials Coordination Center (CTCC) has been tapped to help lead a clinical trial for a potential new treatment for Parkinson ’s disease. The study will evaluate nilotinib, a drug currently used to treat leukemia that has shown promise in early studies in people with Parkinson’s disease.

94. Evaluation of the effective dose due to medical radiation exposures in Tuscany: Methods and operational issues
Medical exposures are the main source of artificial exposure to ionizing radiation for developed countries. In recent years there has been a significant improvement in imaging techniques but also a substantial increase of patient exposures. The harmful effects of radiations used for diagnostic purposes are essentially stochastic. Exposure to ionizing radiation is known to increase the future incidence of cancer (solid tumors and leukemias). The latest EU radiation protection recommendations of the Directive 2013/59/EURATOM layied down basic safety standards for exposure to ionizing radiation.

Cell and gene therapies at the forefront of innovative medical care: Implications for South Africa.
Authors: Pepper MS, Alessandrini M, Pope A, Van Staden W, Green RJ Abstract The fields of cell and gene therapy are moving rapidly towards providing innovative cures for incurable diseases. A current and highly topical example is immunotherapies involving T-cells that express chimeric antigen receptors (CAR T-cells), which have shown promise in the treatment of leukaemia and lymphoma. These new medicines are indicative of the changes we can anticipate in the practice of medicine in the near future. Despite their promise, they pose challenges for introduction into the healthcare sector in South Africa (SA), includin...

Theranostics in Hematooncology
In the early 2000s, major clinical trials provided evidence of a favorable outcome from antibody-mediated radioimmunotherapy for hematologic neoplasms, which then led to Food and Drug Administration approval. For instance, the theranostic armamentarium for the referring hematooncologist now includes 90Y-ibritumomab tiuxetan for refractory low-grade follicular lymphoma or transformed B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, as well as 131I-tositumomab for rituximab-refractory follicular lymphoma. Moreover, the first interim results of the SIERRA phase III trial reported beneficial effects from the use of 131I-anti-CD45 antibodies (Ioma...

Basket Trials for Intractable Cancer
This study has made a significant impact on clinical practice in cancer patients harboring the TRK translocation, and also illustrates the potential for future advancements in drug development and clinical trials of cancers harboring rare genomic alterations (50). Second, a basket trial may allow screening for potential efficacy across multiple tumor types in order to guide more traditional, disease-specific, follow-up studies. The goal of some basket trials is to obtain an overall assessment of the drug with pooled histologies; in such trials, subsequent analyses are straightforward, and are comparable to those in standa...

Association Between Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Web-Based Data in China: Infodemiology Study
Conclusions: Search behaviors indeed reflect public awareness of cancer from a different angle. Research on internet search behaviors could present an innovative and timely way to monitor and estimate cancer incidence and mortality rates, especially for cancers not included in national registries.

Consensus Recommendations on Peripheral Blood Smear Review: Defining Curricular Standards and Fellow Competency
We describe the generation of proposed theory and the consensus recommendations developed through a multi-institutional focus group, developed using constructivist grounded theory and a modified nominal group technique. Eight academic hematologists, spanning classical and malignant hematology, enrolled and participated in two one-hour focus groups. All routinely worked with fellows and half had formally instructed trainees on PBS interpretation. Focus group data was analyzed using mixed methods techniques. Tenets of emerging theory were identified through inductive coding. Consensus recommendations (CR) were generated. Par...

John Goldman obituary
Pioneer in bone-marrow transplantation for chronic myeloid leukaemia, which has enabled thousands of patients to live normal livesWhen John Goldman began his career in the 1960s, the diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) carried a grim prognosis and a life expectancy of only three to five years. Today, thousands of patients have been cured or enjoy relatively normal lives because of his seminal contributions. John, who has died aged 75, pioneered bone-marrow transplantation for CML and later championed the drug imatinib that transformed the treatment of the disease. For 23 years from 1988 he was medical director of t...
