Nationwide Long-Term Growth and Developmental Outcomes of Infants for Congenital Anomalies in the Digestive System and Abdominal Wall Defects With Surgery in Korea
CONCLUSION: Infants with congenital anomalies of the digestive system and abdominal wall defects exhibit poor growth and developmental outcomes until 72 months of age. Close monitoring and careful consideration of their growth and development after discharge are required.PMID:38111278 | PMC:PMC10727918 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e372 (Source: J Korean Med Sci)

Characteristics and Outcome of Neonates With Postnatally Diagnosed Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
This study investigated the characteristics and outcome data of children with prenatally unrecognized CDH.METHODS: Postnatally diagnosed CDH newborns treated at the University Hospital Bonn between 2012 and 2021 were included. Treatment and outcome data were compared according to type of maternity hospital, Apgar values, and between prenatally and postnatally diagnosed CDH.RESULTS: Of 244 CDH newborns, 22 were included. Comparison for birth in a facility with vs. without pediatric care showed for mortality: 9% vs. 27%, p=0.478; ECMO rate: 9% vs. 36%, p=0.300; age at diagnosis: 84 vs. 129 min, p=0.049; time between intubati...

Prevalence of symptomatic tracheal morbidities after fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion A significant proportion of FETO survivors have symptomatic tracheal morbidities of varying severity. Units that are planning to adopt FETO for managing CDH should consider ongoing surveillance of survivors to enable early identification of upper airway issues. Inventing FETO devices that minimise tracheal injury is needed. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood - Fetal and Neonatal Edition)

Timing of Pediatric Incarcerated Inguinal Hernia Repair: A Review of Nationwide Readmissions Data
In pediatric patients, incarcerated inguinal hernias are often repaired on presentation. We hypothesize that in appropriate patients, repair may be safely deferred. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Development of an international core outcome set for treatment trials in paediatric inguinal hernia: protocol for a three-phase study including a systematic review and Delphi survey
Introduction In children, open inguinal hernia repair has been the gold standard for treatment, but with recent technical advancements in laparoscopy, laparoscopic hernia repair is gaining popularity. Despite available results from comparative studies, there is still no consensus regarding the superiority of open versus laparoscopic treatment strategy. An important reason for lack of consensus is the large heterogeneity in the trials’ reported outcomes and outcome definitions, which limits comparisons between studies and precludes conclusions regarding the superiority of treatment strategies. The development and impl...

The outcome of hiatal hernia repair and factors associated with surgical outcome in the pediatric population: a single-center experience
CONCLUSION: The presence of an underlying disease didn't influence the treatment and progression of hiatal hernia. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the clinical course between patients with recurrent hiatal hernia and those experiencing it for the first time. Additionally, the impact of fundoplication on the recurrence of hiatal hernia in pediatric patients was found to be minimal.PMID:38076603 | PMC:PMC10703589 | DOI:10.4174/astr.2023.105.6.396 (Source: Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research)
