The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on presentation of surgical disease in paediatric patients at a tertiary centre in Cape Town, South Africa
CONCLUSION: Paediatric surgical volumes at our centre decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. There was evidence of more advanced disease on presentation of inguinal hernias and intussusception and a generalised increased demand for emergency ICU admission.PMID:38450691 | DOI:10.36303/SAJS.4060 (Source: South African Journal of Surgery)

Most patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who developed pneumothorax on mechanical ventilation have an underlying pulmonary hypoplasia, in which the lung has a physiologically small volume and consequently a low compliance. The Japanese CDH Study Group (JCDHSG) conducted multicenter retrospective cohort studies of pneumothorax development in patients with CDH between 2006 and 2018 [1,2]. Pneumothorax was more likely to develop in patients with CDH associated with larger diaphragmatic defects and was associated with a fatal outcome in neonates with CDH, especially those with large diaphragmatic defects [1,2]....

Laparoscopic Repair of Pediatric Femoral Hernias
Conclusion: Laparoscopy remains a viable tool in diagnosing and managing femoral hernias. Various technically feasible options for laparoscopy and minimally invasive techniques have been described with excellent results and limited recurrence. However, given the quality of the data, further studies are needed to investigate the long-term durability of such repairs.PMID:38442225 | DOI:10.1089/lap.2023.0372 (Source: Adv Data)

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Of course death can happen at any hour. Like this: after birth, at dawn, the sun pressing through thick hospital windows, climbing peach walls of the delivery room, ending the long labor in the operating room. Cutting the baby from where she would not come. My snug gloves, warmth and wetness of birth, every single one. Except she was to die; hole at her center, bowel peristalsing her chest. Months you knew too, carrying her, she moved inside, so different from your miscarriages. Placental separation, inarched to the heart-lung machine, floors junked with effort. Luminescent skin of lanugo, newborn hirsutism; lovely photogr...

Efficacy and safety of general anesthesia with caudal block for inguinal hernioplasty in children: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: In children, the combination of general anesthesia with caudal block, compared to general anesthesia only, is more efficient in suppressing visceral pain, leading to better hemodynamic stability, and reducing the consumption of medicines in the perioperative period.PMID:38436173 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202402_35461 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)
