Seven years of functional lung MRI in children: experiences of more than 900 matrix-pencil decomposition (MP-)MRI measurements in clinics and research
Conclusions: We have pioneered the implementation of MP-MRI into clinics and shown that MP-MRI is applicable in various study settings. It helps guiding clinical decisions and is a promising tool for follow-up of chronic lung diseases providing spatially resolved information on functional deficits. Side-specific assessment of lung function in children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia - functional matrix pencil decomposition MRI as a promising diagnostic tool
Conclusions: Patients with a large CDH showed impaired overall lung function with particular limitation of the ipsilateral side. MP-MRI is a promising tool to provide valuable side-specific functional information in the follow-up of patients with CDH. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Fetal breathing patterns in a lamb model of tracheal occlusion for antenatal treatment of congenital diaphragmatic hernia
In conclusion, lambs with an untreated diaphragmatic hernia increased their fetal breathing frequency from ~100 to 114 days gestation. Tracheal occlusion during the early third trimester increases transrespiratory pressure and eliminates the increase in breath rate consequent to untreated diaphragmatic hernia. Balloon and gel pressure and fetal breathing are similar. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Reduced Long-Term Bowel Obstruction Risk With Minimally Invasive Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair
The introduction of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDH) has reduced postoperative length of stay, postoperative opioid consumption, and provided a more esthetic repair. In adult abdominal surgery, minimally invasive techniques have been associated with decreased long-term rates of small bowel obstruction (SBO), although it is unclear if this benefit carries over into the pediatric population. Our objective was to evaluate the rates of SBO following open versus MIS CDH repair. (Source: Journal of Surgical Research)

Intraoperative Regional Cerebral Oxygenation During Pediatric Thoracoscopic Surgery: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: In this review, pathological cerebral desaturation was noticed in 13.1% of the pediatric thoracoscopic procedures. However, due to limited methodological quality of the included studies, further randomized multicentric studies comparing rcSO2 in open versus thoracoscopic surgeries are needed to derive definitive conclusions.PMID:37862569 | DOI:10.1089/lap.2023.0228 (Source: Adv Data)

Inguinal hernia in premature infants: To operate before or after discharge from hospital?
This study aims to find out the optimal timing for herniotomy for premature infants with inguinal hernia (IH): early during hospitalisation or delayed after hospital discharge. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Late-presenting congenital diaphragmatic hernia in a child with gastric perforation and acute pancreatitis
CONCLUSIONS: Late-presenting congenital diaphragmatic hernias are often misdiagnosed. Clinicians should combine multiple imaging modalities to make a definite diagnosis and perform surgery as soon as possible to avoid severe complications.PMID:37853980 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2022.512 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)
