Genes, Vol. 13, Pages 369: The Complete Chloroplast Genome of Carya cathayensis and Phylogenetic Analysis
gheng Jin Carya cathayensis, an important economic nut tree, is narrowly endemic to eastern China in the wild. The complete cp genome of C. cathayensis was sequenced with NGS using an Illumina HiSeq2500, analyzed, and compared to its closely related species. The cp genome is 160,825 bp in length with an overall GC content of 36.13%, presenting a quadripartite structure comprising a large single copy (LSC; 90,115 bp), a small single copy (SSC; 18,760 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs; 25,975 bp). The genome contains 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. A total of 252 simp...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 1035: Physicochemical Characteristics of Biofuel Briquettes Made from Pecan (Carya illinoensis) Pericarp Wastes of Different Particle Sizes
rrillo Parra Pecan nut (Carya illinoensis) pericarp is usually considered as a waste, with no or low value applications. Its potential as a densified solid biofuel has been evaluated, searching for alternatives to generating quality renewable energy and reducing polluting emissions in the atmosphere, based on particle size, that is an important feedstock property. Therefore, agro-industrial residues from the pecan nut harvest were collected, milled and sieved to four different granulometry: 1.6 mm (N° 12), 0.84 mm (N° 20), 0.42 mm (N° 40), and 0.25 mm (N° 60), used as raw...

Is Skin Prick Test (SPT) Better Than Specific IgE (sIgE) For Predicting Oral Food Challenge (OFC) Outcomes For Pediatric Patients With Pecan And Walnut Food Allergy?
There is paucity of literature exploring cutoff values for pecan/walnut SPT wheal size and sIgE to predict OFC outcomes. Our study is aimed to identify thresholds of SPT and sIgE to accurately diagnose allergic individuals to limit OFC use for diagnosis. (Source: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

Effect of thermal annealing and filler ball-milling on the properties of highly filled polylactic acid/pecan (Carya illinoinensis) nutshell biocomposites
Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 Jan 5:S0141-8130(21)02731-8. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2021.12.101. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiodegradable polymer composites reinforced with agri-food lignocellulosic biowaste represent cost-effective and sustainable materials potentially able to replace traditional composites for structural, household, and packaging applications. Herein, the preparation of polylactic acid (PLA)/pecan nutshell (PNS) biocomposites at high filler loading (50 wt.%) is reported. Moreover, the effect of two environmentally friendly physical treatments, namely ball-milling of the filler and thermal annealing on bioc...

Phytochemical content and potential health applications of pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh) K. Koch] nutshell
CONCLUSION: The pecan nutshell is a promising natural product with pharmaceutical uses in various diseases. However, additional research related to the assessment of efficient extraction methods and characterization, particularly the evaluation of the mechanisms of action in new in vivo models, is necessary to confirm these findings and development of new drugs with therapeutic use.PMID:34986772 | DOI:10.2174/1568026622666220105104355 (Source: Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry)

Stimulatory effects of biochar addition on dry anaerobic co-digestion of pig manure and food waste under mesophilic conditions
In this study, the effects of commonly used biochars (bamboo, rice husk, and pecan shell) on dry co-AD were investigated using mesophilic batch digesters fed with pig manure and food waste as substrates. The results show that the specific methane yield was mildly elevated with the addition of biochars by 7.9%, 9.4%, and 12.0% for bamboo, rice husk, and pecan shell-derived biochar additions, respectively. Biochar did facilitate the degradation of poorly biodegradable organics. In comparison, there was no significant effect on the peak methane production rate by the supplementation of the selected biochars. Among the three m...

Ultrasound-assisted alkaline proteinase extraction enhances the yield of pecan protein and modifies its functional properties
Ultrason Sonochem. 2021 Oct 13;80:105789. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2021.105789. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo enhance the extraction yield of pecan protein and modify its functional properties, this study investigated whether both ultrasound and enzyme have a synergistic impact on the extraction of pecan (Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch) protein. The highest protein extraction rate (25.51%) was obtained under the conditions of 1415.43 W.cm-2, 15 min, pH 10.0, 50 °C, and 1% (w/w) alkaline proteinase. Owing to its high shear, mechanical energy and cavitation, the ultrasound process increased the solubility of the s...
