A Health Survey Revealing Prevalence of Vector-Borne Diseases and Tuberculosis in Papua New Guinea Defence Force Personnel and Families
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 25:tpmd230341. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0341. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Papua New Guinean Defence Force (PNGDF) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) work and train closely. Infectious diseases pose a health threat to both forces, but recent knowledge about the risk at military bases in Papua New Guinea is limited. To improve understanding, a collaborative cross-sectional survey was conducted (March-April 2019) at Lombrum Naval base (Manus province) and Moem Army barracks (Wewak, East Sepik province) plus its Vanimo outpost (Sandaun province). Clinical data, venous blood, and sputum were c...

Barriers to the success of COVID-19 immunisation programs in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea
CONCLUSION: Vaccine hesitancy is a significant problem that has the potential to negatively affect population-level health. An urgent focused effort to strengthen immunisation programs in PNG is evident. Preventative primary health care is a national priority; however, for the successful delivery of vaccination initiatives, well-formed immunisation programs that include education that will dispel myths and misinformation are required.PMID:37730242 | DOI:10.22605/RRH7883 (Source: Rural and Remote Health)

Interpersonal violence in colonial era in Papua, Indonesia: A case study of trauma patterns of a Biak individual
This report is a significant resource for future bioarchaeological studies in Papua as it provides one of the only accounts of skeletal trauma during the colonial period in the region. (Source: International Journal of Osteoarchaeology)

Did interstellar debris fall to the sea floor? Claim meets sea of doubt
In 2014, a rock from space blazed through the atmosphere and exploded off the coast of Papua New Guinea with such ferociousness that some researchers believe the object came from beyond the Solar System. Now, a team of researchers says it has recovered remnants of the meteor from the floor of the Pacific Ocean and claims that a preliminary analysis of their unusual composition points to an origin around another star. Only in the past few years have astronomers realized that interstellar objects sometimes whizz through the Solar System and might even hit Earth. Finding a lump of rock from another planetary system woul...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1817: Metavirome Analysis and Identification of Midge-Borne Viruses from Yunnan Province, China, in 2021
He Zhang Ningyi Jin Midges are widely distributed globally and can transmit various human and animal diseases through blood-sucking. As part of this study, 259,300 midges were collected from four districts in Yunnan province, China, to detect the viral richness and diversity using metavirome analysis techniques. As many as 26 virus families were detected, and the partial sequences of bluetongue virus (BTV), dengue virus (DENV), and Getah virus (GETV) were identified by phylogenetic analysis and PCR amplification. Two BTV gene fragments, 866 bps for the VP2 gene of BTV type 16 and 655 bps for the VP5 gene of BTV typ...

Ecotoxicological risks of metals in the subsistence food garden soils of Watut River floodplains, Papua New Guinea
AbstractExorbitant concentrations of toxic metals in the soil from anthropogenic activities are environmental hazards and key health risk concerns to humans. The subsistence food garden soils have minimum anthropogenic interventions. The ecotoxicological risk potentials of the metals in subsistence food garden settings are unexplored. The metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, and Ni) concentration were assessed in the surface soil fractions (2  mm and 0.2 mm) of food gardens (N = 20) on the floodplains of Watut River, Papua New Guinea. The threshold limits, index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load in...

“This is really something: same place, same day result, same day treatment” women’s experiences of testing positive for HPV and receiving same-day treatment in Papua New Guinea: an interpretative phenomenological analysis
Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is transforming cervical screening globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends same-day HPV screen-and-treat for primary cervical screening in low- and middl... (Source: BMC Women's Health)
