Pneumococcal carriage, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility in Papua New Guinean children vaccinated with PCV10 or PCV13 in a head-to-head trial
CONCLUSION: Even after PCV10 or PCV13 vaccination, children living in a high-risk setting such as PNG continue to experience high levels of pneumococcal colonization, including carriage of highly antimicrobial-resistant PCV serotypes. The study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (CTN NCT01619462).PMID:37479616 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.026 (Source: Vaccine)

Community perspectives and experiences of quality maternal and newborn care in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea
Quality maternal and newborn care is essential for improving the health of mothers and babies. Low- and middle-income countries, such as Papua New Guinea (PNG), face many barriers to achieving quality care for... (Source: BMC Health Services Research)

Protocol for a cluster randomised placebo-controlled trial of adjunctive ivermectin mass drug administration for malaria control on the Bijagos Archipelago of Guinea-Bissau: the MATAMAL trial
Introduction As malaria declines, innovative tools are required to further reduce transmission and achieve elimination. Mass drug administration (MDA) of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) is capable of reducing malaria transmission where coverage of control interventions is already high, though the impact is short-lived. Combining ACT with ivermectin, an oral endectocide shown to reduce vector survival, may increase its impact, while also treating ivermectin-sensitive co-endemic diseases and minimising the potential impact of ACT resistance in this context. Methods and analysis MATAMAL is a cluster-randomised pl...

Factors influencing University of Papua New Guinea medical imaging science students considering rural radiography careers
CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated that UPNG BMIS students would contemplate careers in rural practice and provides evidence to support dedicated undergraduate rural radiography placement. It also highlights the dichotomy in urban and rural services, which suggests the need for greater emphasis on conventional non-digital film screen radiography in the undergraduate program to best support graduates to work and, importantly, work effectively in rural communities. As most students were from rural areas these results must be tempered by the fact that students may simply be wanting to return home rather than reporting explici...

TB treatment using family members, treatment supporters and self-administered therapies in rural Papua New Guinea
CONCLUSION: By considering risk factors when determining their treatment delivery model, strong outcomes were seen in all three groups. Multiple modes of treatment administration, tailored to individuals' needs and risk factors, is a feasible, effective, patient-centred care model for hard-to-reach, resource-limited settings.PMID:37359064 | PMC:PMC10290259 | DOI:10.5588/pha.22.0062 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Global, Regional, and National Quality of Care Index (QCI) of Gastric Cancer: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990-2017
ConclusionThe quality of care of GC has increased worldwide from 1990 to 2017. Also, higher SDI was associated with more quality of care. We recommend conducting more screening and therapeutic programs for early detection and to improve gastric cancer treatment in developing countries. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Pharmacokinetics, feasibility and safety of co-administering azithromycin, albendazole, and ivermectin during mass drug administration: A review
ConclusionThere are relatively limited data on the safety profile of co-administering ivermectin, albendazole and azithromycin as an integrated regimen for NTDs. Despite the limited amount of data, available evidence suggests that such a strategy is safe with an absence of clinically important drug-drug interactions, no serious adverse events reported and little evidence for an increase in mild adverse events. Integrated MDA may be a viable strategy for national NTD programmes. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Rheum After 5: Dr. Nigil Haroon, Photographer
Roughly six years ago, Nigil Haroon, MD, PhD, MBA, division head of rheumatology at the University Health Network, Toronto, traveled almost 9,000 miles from his home to Papua, New Guinea. His plan was to photograph the Raggiana bird-of-paradise, which can only be found in the tropical forests of eastern New Guinea. He spent about two... [Read More] (Source: The Rheumatologist)
