Artificial Q-Grader: Machine Learning-Enabled Intelligent Olfactory and Gustatory Sensing System
In this study, an artificial Q-grader comprising surface-engineered zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films is developed as the artificial nose, tongue, and AI-based statistical data analysis as the artificial brain for identifying both aroma and flavor chemicals in coffee beans. A poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)/ZnO thin film transistor (TFT)-based liquid sensor is the artificial tongue, and an Au, Ag, or Pd nanoparticles/ZnO nanohybrid gas sensor is the artificial nose. In order to classify the flavor of coffee beans (acetic acid (sourness), ethyl butyrate and 2-furanmethanol (sweetness), caffeine (bitterness)) and ...

Responding to domestic and family violence in resource-constrained contexts: a case study on rural policing innovations in Melanesia
This article discusses how police responses are coordinated to address domestic and family violence (DFV) and provides a critical reflection on both internal responses and the complexities of multi-partner operations beyond urban spaces. This article draws on the findings from a stakeholder engagement focus group with 20 participants from four Melanesian countries – Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu – to provide insight into policing innovations in rural contexts. There is a need for improved multisector partnerships, increased police presence and greater reliance on indigenous strategies to improve...

Population structure and migration in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, a region impacted by the kuru epidemic
Explore an in-depth investigation of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Analyses attempt to disentangle the complex relationships between genetics, linguistics, and the clan system of political organization. Additionally, an analysis investigating the impact of the kuru epidemic on migration flows in the region is undertaken. (Source: The American Journal of Human Genetics)

The identification of WHO emergency signs in children by nurses at triage in an emergency department
CONCLUSIONS: Effective screening at triage can enable prompt emergency treatment by nurses and can help focus doctors' attention on children who require it most. There is a need for additional training in the identification of some emergency signs.ABBREVIATIONS: CED: children's emergency department; ETAT: emergency triage assessment and treatment; HCC: Hospital Care for Children; PMGH: Port Moresby General Hospital; PNG: Papua New Guinea; WHO: World Health Organization.PMID:38482930 | DOI:10.1080/20469047.2024.2328903 (Source: Paediatrics and international child health)
