A cross-sectional study to ascertain malaria prevalence among asymptomatic travellers arriving on the Lihir Group of Islands, Papua New Guinea: implications for elimination efforts
The Lihir Islands of Papua New Guinea host a mining operation that has resulted in a mine-impacted zone (MIZ) with reduced malaria transmission and a substantial influx of mine employees, informal cross-countr... (Source: Malaria Journal)

The State and Direction of Treatment of Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction in Papua New Guinea
Heart failure is a leading cause of death and morbidity worldwide.1 It has a protean clinical history punctuated by recurrent hospitalisation after the initial diagnosis that is characterised by progressive deterioration in the cardiac structural and functional status of patients without interventions.2Heart failure mortality remains high, despite the advancement in treat... How rains, pigs, and waterbirds fueled a shocking disease outbreak in Australia
Construction supervisor Jack McCann started to feel “a bit crook”—that’s “sick,” in Australian slang—on the hot afternoon of 26 February 2022. He and some buddies had just finished laying a fireplace hearth in his backyard in Corowa, Australia, population 5500. His friends suggested a trip to the pub. McCann, then 30, told them he needed to beg off. “Usually, I would have been the first one there,” he says. Corowa sits beside the Murray River, which in that region forms the border between the states of New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria, to the south. It’s a scenic area that draws tourists to fish...

News at a glance: SETI ’s big bucks, Australia’s research integrity, and Mars sample return’s slowdown
ASTRONOMY Extraterrestrial intelligence hunt gets big financial boost The search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, received a huge gain last week: a gift of $200 million from the estate of Franklin Antonio, co-founder of Qualcomm, which makes semiconductors and software supporting wireless technology. Antonio, who died last year, was a longtime supporter of the field. He served as the primary benefactor of SETI research on the Allen Telescope Array, a set of radio dishes that listen for alien activity, and also backed PANOSETI, an all-sky search at optical wavelengths. His bequest to the SE...

Cytochrome P450 2D6 profiles and anti-relapse efficacy of tafenoquine against < em > Plasmodium vivax < /em > in Australian Defence Force personnel
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2023 Nov 16:e0101423. doi: 10.1128/aac.01014-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlasmodium vivax infections and relapses remain a major health problem for malaria-endemic countries, deployed military personnel, and travelers. Presumptive anti-relapse therapy and radical cure using the 8-aminoquinoline drugs primaquine and tafenoquine are necessary to prevent relapses. Although it has been demonstrated that the efficacy of primaquine is associated with Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) activity, there is insufficient data on the role of CYP2D6 in the anti-relapse efficacy of tafenoquine. We investigat...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 7422: Differentiating Dyes: A Spectroscopic Investigation into the Composition of Scarlet Bloodroot (Haemodorum coccineum R.Br.) Rhizome
We report the characterisation of 20 compounds extracted from the rhizome of H. coccineum: four sugars and 16 compounds belonging to the PhP family. The compounds include five aglycones and seven glycosylated compounds, of which four contain malonate esters in their structures. Characterisation of these compounds was achieved through 1D and 2D NMR, MS analysis and comparison to the known phytochemistry of other species from the Haemodorum genus. Preliminary anti-microbial activity of the crude extract shows significant inhibition of the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, but no activity against Candid...
