Two < i > Streptococcus pyogenes emm < /i > types and several anaerobic bacterial species are associated with idiopathic cutaneous ulcers in children after community-based mass treatment with azithromycin
Conclusions/SignificanceOur observations confirm the association ofS.pyogenes with IU in yaws-endemic areas, and suggest that additional anaerobic bacteria, but not other microorganisms, may be associated with this syndrome. Our results should aid in the design of diagnostic tests and selective therapies for CU. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Population heterogeneity in < i > Plasmodium vivax < /i > relapse risk
by Eva Stadler, Deborah Cromer, Somya Mehra, Adeshina I. Adekunle, Jennifer A. Flegg, Nicholas M. Anstey, James A. Watson, Cindy S. Chu, Ivo Mueller, Leanne J. Robinson, Timothy E. Schlub, Miles P. Davenport, David S. Khoury A key characteristic ofPlasmodium vivax parasites is their ability to adopt a latent liver-stage form called hypnozoites, able to cause relapse of infection months or years after a primary infection. Relapses of infection through hypnozoite activation are a major contributor to blood-stage infections inP vivax endemic regions and are thought to be influenced by factors such as febrile infections which...

Genes, Vol. 13, Pages 2373: Human Genetic Research in Wallacea and Sahul: Recent Findings and Future Prospects
A. Purnomo Genomic sequence data from worldwide human populations have provided a range of novel insights into our shared ancestry and the historical migrations that have shaped our global genetic diversity. However, a comprehensive understanding of these fundamental questions has been impeded by the lack of inclusion of many Indigenous populations in genomic surveys, including those from the Wallacean archipelago (which comprises islands of present-day Indonesia located east and west of Wallace’s and Lydekker’s Lines, respectively) and the former continent of Sahul (which once combined New ...

A Schistosoma Colitis Case Misdiagnosed as Ulcerative Colitis in a Non-Endemic Area: A Case Report
Iran J Parasitol. 2022 Jul-Sep;17(3):431-435. doi: 10.18502/ijpa.v17i3.10637.ABSTRACTThe differential diagnosis of bloody diarrhea is necessary to specify etiology and plan treatment. Misdiagnosis can lead to catastrophic results with the treatments to be given. In this case report, we present a case of schistosomal colitis mimicking ulcerative colitis in a 26-year-old Guinean male patient diagnosed in 2021.PMID:36466017 | PMC:PMC9682373 | DOI:10.18502/ijpa.v17i3.10637 (Source: Iranian Journal of Parasitology)
