Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 9083: Designing an IoT-Based System for Monitoring Noise Levels in the Computer Science Faculty and Library of the Technological University of Panama
t Orocu Noise pollution is a growing problem in urban areas, and it is important to study and evaluate its impact on human health and well-being. This work presents the design of a low-cost IoT model and implementation of two prototypes to collect noise level data in a specific area of the regional center of Chiriquí, at the Technological University of Panama that can be replicated to create a noise monitoring network. The prototypes were designed using Autodesk Fusion 360, and the data were stored in a MySQL database. Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS Pro were used to analyze the data, generate graphs, and dis...

Transcatheter Vacuum-Assisted Mass Extraction Versus Surgical Debridement for Vegetations in Tricuspid Valve Infective Endocarditis: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies
Tricuspid valve infective endocarditis (TVIE), often associated with vegetation in people who inject drugs, has introduced a less invasive option for vegetation removal: transcatheter vacuum-assisted mass extraction (TVME). This technique is emerging as an alternative to standard surgical debridement (SD) and valve repair. However, the comparative effectiveness of TVME versus SD in treating TVIE has yet to be investigated. A comprehensive systematic literature search was performed on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane to identify all relevant studies comparing TVME with SD in patients with TVIE. Shifts in the coral microbiome in response to < em > in situ < /em > experimental deoxygenation
In this study, we investigated the response of the microbiome to hypoxia in two coral species that differ in their tolerance to hypoxia. We conducted in situ oxygen manipulations on a coral reef in Bahía Almirante on the Caribbean coast of Panama, which has previously experienced documented episodes of hypoxia. Naïve coral colonies (previously unexposed to hypoxia) of Siderastrea siderea and Agaricia lamarcki were transplanted to a reef and either enclosed in chambers that created hypoxic conditions or left at ambient oxygen levels. We collected samples of surface mucus and tissue after 48 hours of exposure and character...

Immunoglobulin treatment for hospitalised infants and young children with respiratory syncytial virus infection
CONCLUSIONS: We are very uncertain about the effect of immunoglobulins on mortality. We are moderately certain that use of immunoglobulins in hospitalised infants and children may result in little to no difference in the length of hospitalisation. Immunoglobulins may result in little to no difference in adverse events, the need for or duration of mechanical ventilation, supplemental oxygen, or admission to the intensive care unit, though we are less certain about this evidence and the true effect of immunoglobulins on these outcomes may differ markedly from the estimated effect observed in this review. All trials were cond...

Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer: progress and challenges in Panama
Rev Panam Salud Publica. 2023 Oct 15;47:e154. doi: 10.26633/RPSP.2023.154. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTDespite being classified as a high-income country, Panama still faces challenges in providing care for children and adolescents with cancer. Annually, 170 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed in Panama, and the survival rate is around 60%. To improve this, the establishment of a Pediatric Cancer Commission comprised of healthcare professionals and nonprofit organizations has been a critical step toward the objectives outlined in the CureAll framework of the World Health Organization Global Initiative for Childhood Can...

Prospective cohort study of incidence and risk factors for catheter-associated urinary tract infections in 145 intensive care units of 9 Latin American countries: INICC findings
ConclusionThe following CAUTI RFs are unlikely to change: age, gender, hospitalization type, and facility ownership. Based on these findings, it is suggested to focus on reducing LOS, UC/DU ratio, and implementing evidence-based CAUTI prevention recommendations. (Source: World Journal of Urology)
