Langerhans cell histiocytosis with nail changes and multisystem disease: a case report.
We describe a 2-year-old boy with onycholysis, subungual hyperkeratosis, and hemorrhages on his fingernails. He also had hepatosplenomegaly and pulmonary involvement. The diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis was made by histopathologic examination of skin and liver. The role of nail involvement as an unfavorable prognostic sign is still unclear and this paper concludes that nail involvement in Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a possible sign of multisystemic involvement. Nail abnormalities in patients with vitiligo
Conclusions: Nail abnormalities were more prevalent in vitiligo patients than in controls. Systematic examination of the nails in such patients is useful because nail abnormalities are frequent. However, the causes of such abnormalities require further study. Longitudinal ridging and leukonychia were the most common abnormalities observed in this study. Incidence, clinical manifestations and clipping of nail psoriasis in the dermatology center of the Hospital Universitário Evangélico de Curitiba
Conclusions: Patients with nail psoriasis are usually men, with worse quality of life and higher chance of psoriatic arthritis. The correlation between the nail involvement of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in hands confirms the association between these two forms. The clinical diagnosis of nail psoriasis did not correlate with the histological diagnosis. (Source: Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia)

Risk factors, clinical variants and therapeutic outcome of retronychia: a retrospective study of 18 patients
ConclusionIn our opinion, ischaemic damage is the main cause of retronychia. Evaluation of clinical variants is mandatory to propose appropriate treatment. The limitations of this study include the retrospective design. (Source: European Journal of Dermatology)

Psoriatic nail involvement and its relationship with distal interphalangeal joint disease
Abstract Psoriatic nail disease and distal interphalangeal (DIP) arthritis both are common manifestations of psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Several clinical characteristics are allegedly associated with DIP joint damage, particularly nail psoriasis. However, there is little evidence to substantiate this phenomenon. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between DIP involvement, nail psoriasis and other parameters. A cross-sectional study involved 45 patients from local rheumatology clinic. Four hundred fifty psoriatic fingernails scored, and the radiographs of all these fingers were revi...

Laser and light therapies for the treatment of nail psoriasis
In this study, the efficacies of light and laser therapies are systematically reviewed. Light therapies involve ultraviolet light (with or without photosensitizers) or intense pulsed light. Alternatively, laser therapy in nail psoriasis is primarily administered using a 595‐nm pulsed dye laser. These modalities have demonstrated significant improvement in psoriatic nail lesions, and even complete resolution in some cases. Both laser and light modalities have also been tested in combination with other systemic or topical therapeutics, with variable improvement in efficacy. Both laser and light therapies are generally well...

Hair and nail adverse events during treatment with targeted therapies for metastatic melanoma
Conclusion Hair and nail side effects during targeted therapy for melanoma are not rare. The early recognition and cure of such side effects by dermatologists is of benefit to ensure the need for dose reduction or drug discontinuation. (Source: European Journal of Dermatology)

Nail alterations during pregnancy: a clinical study
This study investigated the frequency and nature of nail changes occurring during pregnancy in 312 healthy, 18–40‐year‐old pregnant women in gestation weeks 16–40. After a routine obstetric examination at the obstetrics and gynecology clinic at the study institution, all subjects submitted to an examination of all fingernails and toenails. Only nail alterations that had developed during pregnancy were recorded. Any nail changes that had occurred before the start of gestation were not considered. Data were presented as percentages. The Shapiro–Wilk and chi‐squared tests were used to make categorical comparisons....

592 Fingernail photo-onycholysis resulting from aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy with blue light for treatment of actinic keratoses on face
We report a case of fingernail photo-onycholysis in a patient who was treated with PDT-ALA for perioral AKs on the face. A 65 year old female presented with all fingernails noticeably lifted from the nail bed 72 hours post PDT-ALA treatment of AKs on the face. Negative fungal culture results ruled out onychomycosis. It is hypothesized that the patient touched her face with her nails during incubation prior to PDT-ALA treatment under blue light, collecting ALA under her fingernails and exposing them to sunlight post treatment in her garden. [Cosmetic nail products].
Abstract Cosmetic embellishment of fingernails involves the use of substance that harden either after the evaporation of solvents (varnishes) or after polymerisation (artificial acrylic nails, gel tips, glue-on artificial nails). Pathological reactions to cosmetics usually occur at a remote site for varnishes, and, most commonly, in situ with polymerising substances. Unvarnished artificial nails do not affect pulse oximetry readings, and in theory, patients are not required to remove them. However, a real problem of contamination via artificial nails exists. Increased carriage of pathological Gram-negative...
