We describe the management of an iGAS outbreak involving three nursing home residents in Ireland in early 2023. A regional Department of Public Health was notified of an iGAS case in a nursing home resident in January 2023. When two further cases among residents were notified 7 days later, an outbreak was declared. Surveillance for GAS/iGAS infection in residents and staff was undertaken. The site was visited to provide infection prevention and control (IPC) support. Isolates were emm typed. A total of 38 residents and 29 staff in contact with resident cases were provided with antibiotic chemoprophylaxis. Seven additional ...

Access to Oncology Medicines in Canada: Consensus Forum for Recommendations for Improvement
Curr Oncol. 2024 Mar 29;31(4):1803-1816. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040136.ABSTRACTPatient access to new oncology drugs in Canada is only possible after navigating multiple sequential systemic checkpoints for national regulatory approval, health technology assessment (HTA) and collective government price negotiation. These steps delay access and prevent health care providers from being able to prescribe optimal therapy. Eighteen Canadian oncology clinicians from the medicine, nursing and pharmacy professions met to develop consensus recommendations for defining reasonable government performance standards around process and ti...

Contextual barriers and enablers to establishing an addiction-focused consultation team for hospitalized adults with opioid use disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Hospitals planning to implement an ACS in the inpatient setting may wish to engage in a systematic pre-implementation contextual assessment using a similar framework to understand and address potential barriers and contextual factors that may impact implementation. Pre-implementation work can help ensure the ACS and other new practices fit within each unique hospital context.PMID:38671482 | DOI:10.1186/s13722-024-00461-x (Source: Addiction Science and Clinical Practice)

The Effect of Guided Imagery and Progressive Muscle Relaxation on Sedation in Patients Undergoing Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation
This study included 80 patients with a mean age (± SD) of 59.59 ± 9.27 years. The Quade nonparametric ANCOVA revealed the significant impact of intervention on the post values of Total score (p-value < 0.001), Tolerance (p-value < 0.001), Calmness (p-value < 0.001), Ventilator synchrony (p-value < 0.001), face relaxation (p-value < 0.001), Consciousness (p-value = 0.009) and Awakeness (p-value = 0.020). The study findings demonstrated the effectiveness of relaxation program in promoting sedation in patients undergoing NIV. Accordingly, intensive care unit (ICU) nurses at our institution are encouraged to u...

Clinical and Laboratory Characteristics of MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of Young) Cases, Genetic Mutation Spectrum and Phenotype-genotype Relationship
CONCLUSION: This was the largest genetically diagnosed series from Turkey. The most common gene variants were GCK and HNF1A with much lower proportions for other MODY types. Hyperglycemia was the most common presenting symptom while 11% of patients had diabetes-associated autoantibodies and 7% were obese. The majority of patients received dietary management only.PMID:38665000 | DOI:10.4274/jcrpe.galenos.2024.2023-10-16 (Source: Cell Research)

History of development of undergraduate public health education in Bulgaria
CONCLUSION: Despite the continuous development in the organization of undergraduate PH education in Bulgaria, its content is still not fully compatible with the basic European PH services and actions. There is a growing need for wider standardization and integration of undergraduate PH education in the EU so that the specialty can reach the status of a regulated health profession similar to medicine, nursing, and others.PMID:38669158 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7928 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Healthcare providers' perceived barriers and facilitators to screening for intimate partner violence in pregnant women attending prenatal clinics
CONCLUSION: Although higher-than-expected number of healthcare providers reported screening of pregnant women for intimate partner violence, the extent of screening is still suboptimal. The barrier to screening identified needs to be addressed and facilitators promoted. Receiving training among healthcare providers on intimate partner violence screening was associated with higher levels of screening; thus, this needs to be enhanced to optimize screening rates. Future studies should assess screening practices objectively and implement interventions to improve healthcare providers' intimate partner violence screening rates.I...
