Identification of Nursing Outcomes and Quality Indicators for Home Health Care in Older Adults with End-Stage Cancer
CONCLUSION: The caregiver and family's role in end-of-life care had the most indicators, reflecting the significance of family involvement in Thailand's cultural context. Consistent implementation of these indicators is crucial, and correlational analysis of indicator scores can enhance their validity.PMID:38679977 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.4.1189 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Integrating Subjective Recovery and Stigma Resistance in Individuals with Schizophrenia: A Narrative Review and Theoretical Integration
Issues Ment Health Nurs. 2024 Apr 29:1-14. doi: 10.1080/01612840.2024.2341049. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStigmatised attitudes are known to be associated with negative outcomes in schizophrenia, yet there is little focus on the role of stigma in the recovery process. Attempts to develop interventions to reduce self-stigma in schizophrenia have not been found effective. This paper presents a theoretical integration based on a narrative review of the literature. PsycINFO, Medline and Embase databases were searched up to the 11th December 2023. Studies were included if they were: i) empirical studies using qualitative, qu...

Implementation of the Community Homes for Opportunity Program Among Community Mental Health Staff in Southwestern Ontario
This study explored the views of the Community Mental Health Agency staff on their experiences with the CHO and related changes for further improvement of the program. We applied focused ethnographic techniques to recruit 47 agency staff from 28 group homes in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Focus group discussions were conducted at two-time points (baseline-spring 2018 and post-implementation - winter 2019). Data analysis guided by Leininger's ethnographic qualitative analysis techniques produced three main themes and 11 subthemes themes. The main themes include facilitators of CHO, challenges to the CHO implementation, and...

Predictors and Trends of Diabetic Ketoacidosis at Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Malaysian Children
CONCLUSION: DKA rates at initial diagnosis of T1DM in Malaysian children are high and severe DKA accounts for a significant burden. Though misdiagnosis and age ≥5 years are predictors of DKA, misdiagnosis can be improved through awareness and education. The lack of downward trends in DKA and severe DKA highlights the urgency to develop measures to curb its rates.PMID:38683019 | DOI:10.4274/jcrpe.galenos.2024.2024-1-8 (Source: JCRPE Journal of Clinical Research in Pediatric Endocrinology)

Development and Validation of the Curriculum Evaluation Tool - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: A Tool for Evaluating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Nursing Curricula
This article describes the development and initial validation of the CET-DEI, a curriculum evaluation tool for diversity, equity, and inclusion in nursing education. The results of a survey to establish validity are presented. Continued development of this tool shows promise for future integration in curriculum evaluation, an important first step in dismantling barriers to diversity in nursing education and the workforce.PMID:38682837 | DOI:10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000001273 (Source: Nursing Education Perspectives)

Taking High-Fidelity Simulation to the Next Level: Nursing in Nontraditional Environments
Nurs Educ Perspect. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000001275. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNurse educators must prepare nursing students to be competent first responders and providers in nontraditional situations. We developed a course that provides in-depth experiential instruction in disaster nursing, remote/austere nursing, and global health. The Nursing in Nontraditional Environments course provides nursing students with the knowledge and skills to provide quality care to patients in environments outside traditional hospitals and clinics. The course merges survival skills with austere care using evidence-base...

A Comparison of Virtual Reality and Traditional Audio-Recorded Hearing Voices Simulations: Their Impact on Empathy in Health Care Students
Nurs Educ Perspect. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1097/01.NEP.0000000000001271. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmpathy is essential to the development of communication skills. Simulating psychosis to develop empathy for mental health patients is complex; we hypothesized that virtual reality (VR) would be effective in increasing empathy in health care students. This experimental study compared the effectiveness of a VR simulation with a traditional hearing voices simulation as measured by the Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale-Revised. Twenty-five health care students were randomized into two groups. The results indicated that both simulated...

The Role of Delirium on Short- and Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes Following Major Gastrointestinal Surgery for Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative delirium occurred in one in 50 patients undergoing surgical resection of a digestive tract cancer. Delirium was linked to a reduced likelihood of achieving an optimal postoperative outcome, increased ICU utilization, higher expenditures, and a worse long-term prognosis. Initiatives to prevent delirium are vital to improve postoperative outcomes among cancer surgery patients.PMID:38683304 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15358-x (Source: Ann Oncol)
