Vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 related hospital admission in the Netherlands by medical risk condition: A test-negative case-control study
CONCLUSION: Although VE against hospitalization was 78% and increased to 89% after boosting during the Delta-dominant study period, VE was lower in certain high risk groups, for which indirect protection or other protective measures might be of added importance.PMID:38688804 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.017 (Source: Vaccine)

Exploring clinical facilitation and student learning on undergraduate nursing placements through a community of practice lens: A qualitative study
Conclusions: The clinical facilitator role has an important function in preparing student nurses for practice and needs further recognition and continued professional development. Education providers and healthcare organisations need to examine strategies to provide inclusive and supportive work environments, building communities of practice for clinical facilitators and stakeholders to share their experiences and knowledge, promoting individual and group learning, thus improving the student placement experience and fostering the professional identity of clinical facilitators.PMID:38687302 | DOI:10.1080/10376178.2024.23478...

The Relationships among Internalized Stigma, Sense of Coherence, and Personal Recovery of Persons with Schizophrenia Living in the Community
Acta Med Okayama. 2024 Apr;78(2):171-184. doi: 10.18926/AMO/66926.ABSTRACTWe investigated (i) the relationships among internalized stigma (IS), sense of coherence (SOC), and the personal recovery (PR) of persons with schizophrenia living in the community, and (ii) how to improve the support for these individuals. A questionnaire survey on IS, SOC, and PR was sent by mail to 270 persons with schizophrenia living in the community who were using psychiatric daycare services, of whom 149 responded and 140 were included in the analysis. We established a hypothetical model in which IS influences PR, and SOC influences IS and PR,...

The mental workload of ICU nurses performing human-machine tasks and associated factors: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey
CONCLUSION: ICU nurses experience a medium MWL while performing human-machine tasks, but higher mental, temporal, and effort are perceived compared to physical demands. The MWL varied significantly across different human-machine tasks, among which are significantly higher: first aid and life support and information-based human-machine tasks. Task difficulty and system availability are decisive predictors of MWL.IMPACT: This is the first study to investigate the level of MWL of ICU nurses performing different representative human-machine tasks and to explore its predictors, which provides a reference for future research. Perceived Control, Functional Status, Depressive Symptoms, and Anxiety: Mediating and Moderating Influences on Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Heart Failure
CONCLUSION: Functional status moderated the indirect effects of perceived control on HRQoL through DS and anxiety in patients with heart failure. Efforts to improve HRQoL by targeting perceived control may be more effective when considering DS and anxiety in patients with low to moderate levels of functional status.PMID:38687114 | DOI:10.1097/JCN.0000000000001100 (Source: The Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing)

Evaluation of Nurse-Driven Management of Hypoglycemia In Critically Ill Patients
CONCLUSION: Adherence to nurse-driven hypoglycemia protocols can be equally effective in ICU and non-ICU patients. Further research is needed to determine protocol adherence barriers and patient characteristics that influence response to hypoglycemia interventions.PMID:38688842 | DOI:10.4037/ajcc2024320 (Source: American Journal of Critical Care)

Development of a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Activity
J Contin Educ Nurs. 2024 May;55(5):220-223. doi: 10.3928/00220124-20240411-04. Epub 2024 May 1.ABSTRACTGlobal mobility has made global health a priority within nursing curricula and health care organizations. A collaborative online learning activity could promote international perspectives of health care delivery. Including a collaborative online international learning activity in continuing education for practicing nurses is a viable strategy that is consistent with the internationalization at home movement. Use of a qualitative descriptive evaluation approach when teaching prelicen-sure nursing students and educating pra...

Bridging the Gap: The Vital Role of Nursing in Caring for Military Members and Veterans and Their Families
J Contin Educ Nurs. 2024 May;55(5):217-219. doi: 10.3928/00220124-20240411-03. Epub 2024 May 1.ABSTRACTIn 2011, a national call from The White House set in motion an initiative for action called Joining Forces to serve America's military families. This initiative, led by then-First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, was intended to unite public and private sectors to ensure active military service members, veterans, and their families had the educational, employment, and wellness resources they needed to succeed. Although the nursing profession started to respond to this call to action, it was never embraced as a prio...

Effective preceptors lead to better patient outcomes as new nurses are better equipped to deliver high-quality care under the guidance of experienced mentors. Providing a supportive preceptor experience increases job satisfaction and retention rates among new and tenured nurses, ultimately benefiting health care organizations. When designing preceptor development programs, health care institutions should incorporate the Outcome-Based Continuing Education M...

Mechanical ventilation in older adults with dementia: opportunities to promote goal-concordant care
CONCLUSION: Future efforts to promote goal-concordant care surrounding mechanical ventilation use for people living with dementia should involve identifying barriers to goal-concordant care in pre-hospital settings, assessing the timeliness of in-hospital GOCD, and developing strategies for in-the-moment crisis communication across settings.PMID:38685288 | DOI:10.1016/j.jpainsymman.2024.04.021 (Source: Pain Physician)

Efficacy of a Single Day Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Training Course for Critical Care Air Transport Team Eligible Personnel
CONCLUSIONS: An abbreviated 1-day lecture and hands-on task-trainer-based ECMO course resulted in a high rate of successful skill demonstration and improvement of physicians' and nurses' knowledge assessments and confidence levels, similar to our previous live-tissue training program. When compared to our previous studies, the addition of telemedicine and patient transportation to this study did not affect the duration or performance of procedures.PMID:38687647 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae138 (Source: Military Medicine)
