SARS-CoV-2 immunity and reasons for non-vaccination among healthcare workers from eastern and northern Switzerland: results from a nested multicentre cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Almost all healthcare workers in our cohort had specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 from natural infection and/or from vaccination. Young healthcare workers and those working in non-acute settings were less likely to be vaccinated, whereas physicians and administrative staff showed higher vaccination uptake. Presumed ineffectiveness of the vaccine is an important reason for non-vaccination.PMID:38689545 | DOI:10.57187/s.3734 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Stress and academic engagement among Saudi undergraduate nursing students: The mediating role of emotion regulation and emotional intelligence
This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional research design.MethodsThe study recruited 367 Saudi undergraduate nursing students at a major Saudi university. Structural equation modelling was used to explore the mediational model.ResultsThe results of the ANOVA and WelchF-test demonstrated that the emotional intelligence, emotional regulation and academic engagement scores were statistically significantly different according to stress levels (p-values<0.01). Perceived stress has a statistically significant moderate negative correlation with academic engagement and emotional intelligence and a strong negative corre...

Interprofessional collaborative practice and learning: Getting the language right
I was recently asked to present a talk on interprofessional collaborative practice in healthcare at a Structural Heart and Interventional Cardiology conference in Melbourne, Australia. Even though this was not my comfort zone of clinical practice (I am a former intensive care nurse), I enjoyed listening to presentations and live demonstration cases of highly complex technical procedures typically undertaken in the Cardiac Cath Lab. Throughout the conference I was struck by the number of different team members that exist in this health care ( “heart”) team - all working together to produce the best outcomes for patients...

Association between PM < sub > 10 < /sub > exposure and risk of myocardial infarction in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur findings indicate that PM10 exposure is associated with an increased risk of MI. This can aid in informing environmental policy-making, personal-level preventative measures, and global public health action. (Source: PLoS One)

Cost analysis for initiating an integrated package of essential non-communicable disease interventions (PEN-Plus) in Kondoa District Hospital, Tanzania: a time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) study protocol
This study aims to estimate the cost of initiating PEN-Plus for rheumatic heart disease, sickle cell disease and type 1 diabetes at Kondoa district hospital in Tanzania. Methods and analysis We will employ time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) to quantify the capacity cost rates (CCR), and capital and recurrent costs associated with the implementation of PEN-Plus. Data on resource consumption will be collected through direct observations and interviews with nurses, the medical officer in charge and the heads of laboratory and pharmacy units/departments. Data on contact times for targeted NCDs will be collected by obs...

Status of the midwifery workforce and childbirth services and the impact of midwife staffing on birth outcomes in China: a multicentre cross-sectional study
Conclusion The rates of childbirth interventions including the overall caesarean section in China and the episiotomy rate, especially in the central region, remain relatively high. Improved midwife staffing was associated with reduced rates of instrumental vaginal delivery and episiotomy, indicating that further investments in the midwifery workforce could produce better childbirth outcomes. American Society for Pain Management Nursing and Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Position Statement: Pain Management at the End of Life
Fundamental to the quality of life is assisting patients in relieving pain including at the end of life. Compassionate, effective, evidence-based pain care for the dying improves the quality of life for patients and may reduce distress and complicated bereavement in the loved ones witnessing this death. However, efforts designed to mitigate the consequences of the opioid epidemic have seriously compromised pain care at the end of life. This has created an urgent need to focus on the barriers to relief, and solutions necessary to provide safe and effective pain and symptom management in this population. Feasibility of In-Home Virtual Reality for Chronic Pain in Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD), the most commonly inherited group of red blood cell disorders in the United States (National Human Genome Research Institute, 2020), affects more than 100,000 people (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). This pain condition causes a significant burden to individuals, families, and the healthcare infrastructure, with medical costs totaling approximately $2.98 billion annually (Huo et al., 2018). Chronic pain in SCD is ongoing pain that was present, in one or more locations, on most days for more than 6 months (Dampier et al., 2017). (Source: Pain Management Nursing)

Exploring clinical facilitation and student learning on undergraduate nursing placements through a community of practice lens: A qualitative study
Conclusions: The clinical facilitator role has an important function in preparing student nurses for practice and needs further recognition and continued professional development. Education providers and healthcare organisations need to examine strategies to provide inclusive and supportive work environments, building communities of practice for clinical facilitators and stakeholders to share their experiences and knowledge, promoting individual and group learning, thus improving the student placement experience and fostering the professional identity of clinical facilitators.PMID:38687302 | DOI:10.1080/10376178.2024.23478...

The Relationships among Internalized Stigma, Sense of Coherence, and Personal Recovery of Persons with Schizophrenia Living in the Community
Acta Med Okayama. 2024 Apr;78(2):171-184. doi: 10.18926/AMO/66926.ABSTRACTWe investigated (i) the relationships among internalized stigma (IS), sense of coherence (SOC), and the personal recovery (PR) of persons with schizophrenia living in the community, and (ii) how to improve the support for these individuals. A questionnaire survey on IS, SOC, and PR was sent by mail to 270 persons with schizophrenia living in the community who were using psychiatric daycare services, of whom 149 responded and 140 were included in the analysis. We established a hypothetical model in which IS influences PR, and SOC influences IS and PR,...

Perceived Control, Functional Status, Depressive Symptoms, and Anxiety: Mediating and Moderating Influences on Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Heart Failure
CONCLUSION: Functional status moderated the indirect effects of perceived control on HRQoL through DS and anxiety in patients with heart failure. Efforts to improve HRQoL by targeting perceived control may be more effective when considering DS and anxiety in patients with low to moderate levels of functional status.PMID:38687114 | DOI:10.1097/JCN.0000000000001100 (Source: The Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing)
