Working as a technician
Please delete if not appropriate. I keep seeing candidates referring to themselves as a "veterinary technician" or working as a technician for the experience hours. As a credentialed veterinary technician who has been in the field for 16 years, PLEASE STOP. Please start referring to your hours as veterinary experience hours, or veterinary assistant hours. You don't see medical school applicants advertising the hours they worked as a nurse, because they did not. Turning the term... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Clinical Hours: Continuous or Diverse?
Im a premed senior in highschool. I’ve been working for a skilled nursing facility for over a year and have ~600 hours. With clinical hours, specifically paid ones, do medical schools want to see diverse settings? By diverse I mean like maybe sticking with a job for a few years, or maybe staying for 6 months and then going to another position? I feel like consistently going to another position, like from skilled nursing CNA to ED, may show more diverse experience, but it also might make it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Consult Liaison Psychiatry Questions?
I work at a VA. Our C/L psychiatrist recently left on short notice. Is anyone aware of facilities, especially other VAs, where psychiatry consults from medical floors are managed by mental health staff that are non-psychiatrists (i.e. psychiatric NP, psychiatric physician assistant, mental health pharmacist, mental health social worker, psychiatric nurse, etc.)? Also, if a psychiatrist is not available on weekends and holidays, are there any facilities with setups that utilize mental... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hospitalist - problems with nurses
Some background, I went to med school at an academic center, then residency at a large (>400 bed) community hospital, and now am a hospitalist at a rural (<100) bed hospital. I have only been here a little while, but so far I have gotten a few nursing complaints. In these complaints, the nurses lie, exaggerate and spin little things to make them sound terrible. So far my medical director has not made a big deal out of them, but at the same time I know it cannot be good for me from a job... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Assisted living contracts
Does anyone have any information or guidance on WHAT contracts or language to have in place when contracting with an assisted living/nursing home as a mobile podiatrist? I have been doing this awhile (side job), but only as a contractor. I have realized I have been giving away a HUGE percentage by not securing these contracts on my own. The problem is that I am missing the piece of knowledge of: 1. Do I give them a general ABN? 2. A contract that makes that details the primary care... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Drop out or try for residency?
I’m a 4th year medical student who passed comlex but failed step 1. I applied with comlex only but understand I can be fired for this offense. Should I just withdraw my app and do something non clinical? Or should I try nursing instead? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nursing home audit
My office got a weird call from a department of health employee who says that are doing an annual nursing home audit at a facility where a patient of mine resides. They said they had some questions about the “psychiatric services I provide to the patient.” They asked to talk to my nursing staff, not me. No release of information provided. This was earlier this week and they did not call us back even. I’m not on staff at the nursing home or anything. I essentially see the patient as if... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Oral airways in pacu
What’s your guys policy with oral airways in pacu ? The pacu nurses are complaining that patients are coming out too sleepy with oral airway in place and it’s a safety issue. Surprised because this was never an issue at other hospitals I practiced at. We cover many hospitals but this was in issue at a fast turnover private practice ambulatory surgical center… (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Lacking research but is it necessary?
I’m in my last semester of UG and decided I want to pursue medical school. I’ve seen a few posts on SDN with a few people with stats like me and they’ve been recommended to even apply to some ivy leagues. I’m taking a gap year for sure but here are some EC’s. But I just have zero research experience. D1 Athlete for two years, full scholarship, but career ending injury so a pretty strong why. Nurse Technician - just started but will continue to work full time during my gap year. Ronald... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC: Lower but upward trend GPA; Average DAT
Date of submission: 8/7/23, Verified 8/25/23 Overall GPA: 3.52 Science GPA: 3.46 Bio-Chem-Physics GPA: 3.31 (Currently taking Physics) As a nursing student I was not passionate about the path I was taking (nursing) and really suffered during school (leaving my nursing university with a 3.2 GPA). I made this clear and talked about my journey in my personal statement, so I believe my rising GPA shows dedication and a passionate need for my career as a dentist. DAT score (include AA and...
