Research translation to improve carer smoking cessation support in a paediatric ward of a regional hospital in the Northern Territory
CONCLUSIONS: With some preparation, a research translation workshop and meetings with selected leaders can initiate organisational change in similar settings and is consistent with theories of planned change. SO WHAT?: This paper describes the use of a process to support health promotion through new policies and practices following research which identified barriers in a hospital ward.PMID:36727287 | DOI:10.1002/hpja.698 (Source: Health Promotion Journal of Australia)

Assessing the Effect of an Inpatient Smoking Cessation Brief Intervention Tool on Long-Term Smoking Cessation Rates and Patient Interest for Nicotine Replacement Therapy: A Retrospective Analysis
This study aims to assess the effect of the SCCP on long-term smoking cessation rates recorded in subsequent readmissions, and whether the SCCP as an intervention affects inpatients ’ interest in nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) during admission and after discharge. Methods: We retrospectively analysed data provided by the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) on patients who self-identified as a current smoker on admission to any ward and were admitted to the PAH between 1st January 2018 and 31st December 2019. Smoking cessation rates and patient interest in NRT by SCCP completion were analysed using χ2 tests and a multin...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 1229: Predictors of Re-Engagement after Relapse in a Tobacco Quit Line Intervention: Secondary Analysis from a Randomized Clinical Trial
Robert C. Klesges People who smoke often make several quit attempts before successfully maintaining abstinence. Therefore, incorporating re-engagement for people who fail to initially quit could increase quit attempts and ultimately increase cessation rates. Within the context of quit line-based interventions, it remains unknown what characteristics are associated with re-engagement. The purpose of this study was to assess associations between demographic and motivational characteristics, tobacco use, and initial intervention engagement with re-engagement in a tobacco quit line intervention. Among 372 adults who report...

A pilot adaptive trial of text messages, mailed nicotine replacement therapy, and telephone coaching among primary care patients who smoke
Sequential multiple assignment randomized trials (SMART) inform the design of adaptive treatment interventions. We tested the feasibility of a SMART to deliver a stepped-care intervention among primary care patients who smoked daily. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Successful Optimization of Tobacco Dependence Treatment in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Controlled Trial Using the Multiphase Optimization Strategy
CONCLUSION: The brief negotiation interview and nicotine replacement therapy were efficacious. This study is the first to identify components of ED-initiated tobacco dependence treatment that are individually effective. Future work will address the scalability of the brief negotiation interview and nicotine replacement therapy by offering provider-delivered brief negotiation interviews and nicotine replacement therapy prescriptions.PMID:36585318 | DOI:10.1016/j.annemergmed.2022.08.018 (Source: Cancer Control)

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 250: Safety of Nicotine Replacement Therapy during Pregnancy: A Narrative Review
Conclusions: NRT is not completely harmless for the fetus or for the mother; however, if an adequate assessment of the risk-benefit binomial is made, its use during pregnancy to aid in quitting smoking does seem appropriate. It is necessary to establish individual recommendations on the formulation and dose to be used during pregnancy based on individual nicotinic needs. Nicotine replacement therapy for vaping cessation among mono and dual users: A mixed methods preliminary study
In conclusion, adults are interested in quitting e-cigarettes due to negative consequences of use and are willing to use pharmacotherapy. Future research should confirm these results in a larger trial, address cigarette smoking in dual users, and aim to disseminate treatments.PMID:36549102 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2022.107579 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Confidence in nicotine for tobacco harm reduction —Bridging the policy–practice gap
Alternative nicotine products, such as nicotine replacement therapy and e-cigarettes, are now endorsed in the UK at a policy level based on a tobacco harm reduction approach that encourages tobacco users to completely switch to a less risky nicotine-containing product. The potential role of ‘clean’ nicotine alternatives to reduce the harms from tobacco is, however, not being translated into practice due to a lack of nicotine confidence among key stakeholders. For example, many healthcare practitioners still bundle tobacco, cigarettes, smoking, cancer and nicotine into one, thus pre venting them from supporting their pa...

Smoking Cessation Interventions for Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A NARRATIVE REVIEW WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR PULMONARY REHABILITATION
J Cardiopulm Rehabil Prev. 2022 Dec 14. doi: 10.1097/HCR.0000000000000764. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Reducing disease burden in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) focuses, in part, on helping patients become more functional through programs such as pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). Smoking cessation may be a prerequisite or component of PR, and determining which smoking interventions (eg, behavioral, pharmacotherapy, combination) are most effective can help guide efforts to extend them to patients with COPD. The purpose of this narrative review was to summarize evidence from studies testin...
