Development of two novel treatments to promote smoking cessation: Savor and retrieval-extinction training pilot clinical trial findings
Exp Clin Psychopharmacol. 2023 Mar 13. doi: 10.1037/pha0000644. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite decades of progress, cigarette smoking remains a significant contributor to disease burden. This effect is especially pronounced for specific priority populations, such as individuals who live in rural communities, in that the burden of tobacco smoking is greater among these groups than in urban areas and the general population. The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of two novel tobacco treatment interventions delivered through remote telehealth procedures to individuals who smoke in the stat...

Harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) in two novel nicotine pouch products in comparison with regular smokeless tobacco products and pharmaceutical nicotine replacement therapy products (NRTs)
Tobacco-free nicotine pouches is a novel category of oral nicotine-delivery products. Among current tobacco users such pouches may serve as a low-risk alternative to cigarettes or conventional, tobacco-based o... (Source: Chemistry Central Journal)

A pilot cluster randomised controlled trial of a peer-delivered outreach community-based smoking cessation intervention for women living in disadvantaged communities in Ireland
DISCUSSION: The design of our project provides an affordable solution for governments in prioritising outreach smoking cessation in vulnerable populations in countries with rising rates of female lung cancer. Our community-based model using a CBPR approach empowers local women to become trained to deliver smoking cessation programmes within their own local communities. This provides a foundation to create a sustainable and equitable way to address tobacco use in rural communities.PMID:36802719 | DOI:10.22605/RRH8163 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

180. A Missing Patch in Training: Pediatric Residents ’ Attitudes, Practices, Training and Confidence Around Prescribing Nicotine Replacement Therapy
In 2021, more than 2 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days. Of those who use e-cigarettes, 44% endorse regular use and likely physical dependence. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a recommended treatment for nicotine use disorder, however adolescents under the age of 18 are unable to access NRT without a prescription. Little is known about pediatricians ’ rate of prescribing NRT, and therefore, lack of access to NRT may be a barrier to cessation for adolescents. (Source: Journal of Adolescent Health)

Outcomes Among People With Schizophrenia Participating in General-Population Smoking Cessation Treatment: An Observational Study
CONCLUSION: There is abundant demand for tobacco cessation treatment in this population. Outcomes were substantially poorer for people with schizophrenia, and this difference was not explained by covariates. Cessation remained much better than for unaided quit attempts, however, and engagement was high, demonstrating that people with schizophrenia benefit from nonspecialized pharmacological treatment programs.PMID:36760089 | DOI:10.1177/07067437231155693 (Source: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry)

Smoking Cessation for Preoperative Optimization
Clin Colon Rectal Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1760870Cigarette smoking is associated with pulmonary and cardiovascular disease and confers increased postoperative morbidity and mortality. Smoking cessation in the weeks before surgery can mitigate these risks, and surgeons should screen patients for smoking before a scheduled operation so that appropriate smoking cessation education and resources can be given. Interventions that combine nicotine replacement therapy, pharmacotherapy, and counseling are effective to achieve durable smoking cessation. When trying to stop smoking in the preoperative period, surgical patients exper...
