Smoking Cessation Does Not Worsen Mental Health Outcomes, Study Finds
Smoking cessation may be associated with improved mental health outcomes among people with and without psychiatric disorders, according to astudy published yesterday inJAMA Network Open.“Many people who smoke state that they want to quit, but many continue because they report that smoking helps relieve stress and offers other mental health benefits,” wrote Angela Difeng Wu, M.Sc., and Min Gao, Ph.D., of the University of Oxford, and colleagues. “The belief that cigarettes are calming is widespread, and some health professionals may deter people with mental health disorders from trying to stop smoking.”Wu, Gao, and ...

Antidepressants for smoking cessation
CONCLUSIONS: There is high-certainty evidence that bupropion can aid long-term smoking cessation. However, bupropion may increase SAEs (moderate-certainty evidence when compared to placebo/no pharmacological treatment). There is high-certainty evidence that people taking bupropion are more likely to discontinue treatment compared with people receiving placebo or no pharmacological treatment. Nortriptyline also appears to have a beneficial effect on smoking quit rates relative to placebo, although bupropion may be more effective. Evidence also suggests that bupropion may be as successful as single-form NRT in helping people...

Association of nicotine replacement therapy product sales with menthol cigarette sales restriction in Massachusetts
CONCLUSION: The increases in sales of gum and lozenge NRT products in Massachusetts after implementing the policy suggest that a nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes can increase NRT product use; therefore, interventions are needed to strengthen cessation support for adults who smoke cigarettes but intend to quit.PMID:37160349 | DOI:10.1136/tc-2023-057942 (Source: Cancer Control)

Novel proposed cutoff values for anatabine and anabasine in differentiating smokers from non-smokers
CONCLUSIONS: The cutoff values >0.097 ng/mL for anatabine and >0.236 ng/mL for anabasine appear to better differentiate tobacco users from abstainers than the current reference threshold (>2 ng/mL for both alkaloids). It may considerably impact patients' care, especially in transplantation settings in which smoking abstinence is essential to avoid adverse outcomes of transplantation.PMID:37146788 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2023.04.010 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Nicotine receptor partial agonists for smoking cessation
CONCLUSIONS: Cytisine and varenicline both help more people to quit smoking than placebo or no medication. Varenicline is more effective at helping people to quit smoking than bupropion, or a single form of NRT, and may be as or more effective than dual-form NRT. People taking varenicline are probably more likely to experience SAEs than those not taking it, and while there may be increased risk of cardiac SAEs and decreased risk of neuropsychiatric SAEs, evidence was compatible with both benefit and harm. Cytisine may lead to fewer people reporting SAEs than varenicline. Based on studies that directly compared cytisine and...

Smoking, heated tobacco products, alcohol and diabetes mellitus (update 2023)
Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2023 Jan;135(Suppl 1):84-90. doi: 10.1007/s00508-023-02161-z. Epub 2023 Apr 20.ABSTRACTSmoking and second-hand smoke strongly increase incidence of diabetes and probability for its complications. Smoking cessation can lead to weight gain and increased diabetes risk; however, it decreases cardiovascular and total mortality. A basal diagnostics (Fagerström Test, exhaled CO) is the basis for successful smoking cessation. Supporting medication include Varenicline, Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Bupropion. Socio-economic as well as psychological factors play an important role for smoking and smoking ces...

Smoking cessation patterns, usefulness of quitting methods, and tobacco cessation motivators and barriers to quit in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSIONS: Current users expressed several negative emotions including coping with the disease and "being a pleasurable habit" when trying to quit. Future cessation programs should address these barriers to support patients with RA. Key Points • First study characterizing the smoking behavior of patients with RA in the USA. Current users were younger, had a shorter disease duration, and worse disease outcomes compared to former smokers. • Former and current users reported similar motivators to quit, with experiencing a major health event being most common. Only about a third of participants who quit or who were still...

Study of exit survey and awareness program analysis on tobacco cessation counselling amongst the health care professionals of the tertiary care
CONCLUSION: There is an urgent need for awareness among health care professionals in order to investigate, consult and stop smoking cessation. Our research strongly identifies an opportunity to significantly increase access to tobacco control services in rural India.PMID:37091032 | PMC:PMC10114552 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1133_22 (Source: Primary Care)

Effectiveness of ENDS, NRT and medication for smoking cessation among cigarette-only users: a longitudinal analysis of PATH Study wave 3 (2015-2016) and 4 (2016-2017), adult data
Conclusion No differences were found when cessation rates of ENDS, NRT or non-NRT medication were compared. Given uncertainty about the long-term health effect of ENDS and the likelihood of becoming dual users, people who smoke and need assistance quitting should be encouraged to use current Food and Drug Administration-approved cessation methods until more effective methods are developed.
