Enduring association between irritable bowel syndrome and war trauma during the Nicaragua civil war period: A population-based study
CONCLUSION: An enduring association was observed in the Nicaragua civilian population between specific civil war-related events and subsequent IBS. Civilian populations in regions with extended armed conflict may warrant provider education and targeted interventions for patients.PMID:38130999 | PMC:PMC10731151 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i45.5953 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Validation of a Latin-American Spanish version of the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA-LA) in Colombian and Nicaraguan adults
ConclusionThe Latin-American Spanish version of the BESAA (BESAA-LA) appears to be a psychometrically sound measure with good reliability, validity and invariance across gender and countries. These results support the use of this scale to measure body satisfaction/dissatisfaction in Latin American adult populations. (Source: Journal of Eating Disorders)

Interventions for improving coverage of childhood immunisation in low- and middle-income countries
CONCLUSIONS: Health education, home-based records, a combination of involvement of community leaders with health provider intervention, and integration of immunisation services may improve vaccine uptake. The certainty of the evidence for the included interventions ranged from moderate to very low. Low certainty of the evidence implies that the true effect of the interventions might be markedly different from the estimated effect. Further, more rigorous RCTs are, therefore, required to generate high-certainty evidence to inform policy and practice.PMID:38054505 | PMC:PMC10698843 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD008145.pub4 (Source...

The effect of El Ni ño and La Niña episodes on the existing niche and potential distribution of vector and host species of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
Acta Trop. 2023 Nov 8:107060. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.107060. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLeishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans by a protozoan parasite through sandfly vectors and multiple vertebrate hosts. The Pan American Health Organization reported a declining trend in cases, with Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Nicaragua, and Bolivia having the most cases in 2020. There are still knowledge gaps in transmission and the parasite-host relationship. Ecological niche modeling has been used to study host-vector relationships, disease dynamics, and the impact of climate change. Understanding these aspec...

Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Vol 153(2), Feb 2024, 282-292; doi:10.1037/xge0001481Two universal strategies for attaining influence—dominance, or the use of intimidation and force to obtain power, and prestige, or garnering respect by demonstrating knowledge and expertise—are communicated through distinct nonverbal displays in North America. Given evidence for the emergence and effectiveness of these strategies across cultures, including non-Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic small-scale, traditional societies in Africa, Asia, and South America, the nonverbal displays that are used t...

CO < sub > 2 < /sub > emissions in Latin America: a time series perspective based on fractional integration
This article deals with the analysis of [Formula: see text] emissions in Latin America by using a long memory process based on fractional integration. Using data of [Formula: see text] emission and [Formula: see text] emissions per capita, for 32 Latin American and Caribbean countries, the results show significant differences according to the variable examined, the model used, and the country under examination. In particular, for the [Formula: see text] emissions, mean reversion is found in Belize and also under some circumstances in Antigua and Barbuda, Colombia, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Honduras, N...
