Barriers to access to health services for women and children in Latin AmericaBarreiras de acesso aos servi ços de saúde para mulheres e crianças na América Latina
CONCLUSIONS: Women who reported barriers to access had a statistically significant lower probability of using essential health services for themselves and their children. Strategies aimed at removing barriers should focus not only on improving the range of services offered, but also address issues related to norms, gender roles, and women's empowerment if sustainable progress toward universal access is to be made.PMID:35875315 | PMC:PMC9299390 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2022.94 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Neurological and neuropsychological sequelae of Zika virus infection in children in Le ón, Nicaragua
CONCLUSIONS: Larger studies are needed to definitively investigate the relationship between Zika virus infection and neurological symptoms and neurocognitive problems, with adjustment for factors affecting cognition and behavior, including mood and sleep disorders, home learning environment, history of neuroinvasive infections, and detailed family history of neuropsychological problems.PMID:35875321 | PMC:PMC9299389 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2022.90 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Defining availability of 100 essential diagnostic items for children with cancer and gaps in implementing WHO recommendations: Global CEDx Working Group survey
This study established the availability of a core set of 100 essential diagnostic items recommended by WHO in low-income and middle-income countries in different phases of expanding access to care for children with cancer. A scarcity of essential laboratory and pathology, surgery and anaesthesia, and imaging diagnostics in all settings were identified, as well as a disproportionate lack of access for patients in the public setting, further disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored local awareness and factors affecting adoption and implementation of WHO recommendations and priorities for policy action. Our fin...

Viruses, Vol. 14, Pages 1395: Gut Microbiome Changes Occurring with Norovirus Infection and Recovery in Infants Enrolled in a Longitudinal Birth Cohort in Leon, Nicaragua
In this study, we characterized infant gut microbiome changes occurring with norovirus-associated acute gastroenteritis (AGE) and the extent of recovery. Metagenomic sequencing was performed on the stools of five infants participating in a longitudinal birth cohort study conducted in León, Nicaragua. Taxonomic and functional diversities of gut microbiomes were profiled at time points before, during, and after norovirus infection. Initially, the gut microbiomes resembled those of breastfeeding infants, rich in probiotic species. When disturbed by AGE, Gammaproteobacteria dominated, particularly Pseudomonas sp...

Can farm and food waste power tomorrow ’s airplanes?
.news-article__hero--featured .parallax__element{ object-position: 15% 50%; -o-object-position: 15% 50%; } It’s a painful truth for people who fly: Airplanes are climate killers. Air travel is among the most carbon-polluting human activities. A round trip from New York City to London emits nearly 1000 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) per passenger, more than an average person in Burundi, Nicaragua, or 47 other countries emits in a year. Annually, airplanes spew some 920 million tons of CO 2 , accounting for roughly 3.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Derek Vardon is hoping a y...

Feasibility and Acceptability of Tele-Colposcopy on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua: A Descriptive Mixed-Methods Study
Conclusions: As faster connectivity becomes available in remote settings, Mobile Health tools such as tele-colposcopy will be increasingly feasible to provide access to high-quality cervical cancer follow-up. World Health Organization guidance on integrating technology into existing programs will remain important to ensure programmatic efficacy, local relevance, and sustainability.PMID:35720751 | PMC:PMC9049806 | DOI:10.1089/tmr.2021.0024 (Source: Cancer Control)

Large difference but high correlation between creatinine and cystatin C estimated glomerular filtration rate in Mesoamerican sugarcane cutters
Conclusions Creatinine increases among heat-stressed workers reflect reduced glomerular filtration as estimated using eGFRcys, a marker independent of muscle mass and metabolism. The discrepancy between eGFRcr and eGFRcys may indicate reduced glomerular filtration of larger molecules and/or systemic bias in CKD-EPI performance in this population.
