Repeated Divergence in Opsin Gene Expression Mirrors Photic Habitat Changes in Rapidly Evolving Crater Lake Cichlid Fishes
Am Nat. 2024 May;203(5):604-617. doi: 10.1086/729420. Epub 2024 Mar 15.ABSTRACTAbstractSelection pressures differ along environmental gradients, and traits tightly linked to fitness (e.g., the visual system) are expected to track such variation. Along gradients, adaptation to local conditions might be due to heritable and nonheritable environmentally induced variation. Disentangling these sources of phenotypic variation requires studying closely related populations in nature and in the laboratory. The Nicaraguan lakes represent an environmental gradient in photic conditions from clear crater lakes to very turbid great lake...

Quantification of the burden of chronic kidney disease in Latin America: an invisible epidemicQuantifica ção da carga da doença renal crônica na América Latina: uma epidemia invisível
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic kidney disease is an invisible epidemic that places an excessive burden in terms of mortality and DALYs on Latin American countries. It is essential to join forces to tackle the disease in the region, and promote local actions that address the particularities of each country.PMID:38623527 | PMC:PMC11018258 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2024.41 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Impact of an International Training on Interventionists' Expertise in Cleft Palate Speech: Results From Oaxaca, Mexico
CONCLUSIONS: Findings provide preliminary support for such two-stage international trainings in preparing local speech interventionists to deliver high-quality speech services to individuals born with cleft palate. While content knowledge appears to be acquired primarily from the online course, the two-stage training incorporating in-person supervised practice working with individuals born with cleft palate may best enhance continued clinical skill development, including replacement of NSOME with evidence-based speech treatment. Such trainings contribute to building capacity for sustainable quality services for this popula...

Nicaraguan government puts mining over justice | Science
Nicaragua contains 7% of global biodiversity and encompasses 60% of Central America ’s ecosystem types (1). In recent decades, corruption, crime, and government negligence have threatened the country’s biodiversity, especially in areas such as the Bosawás Reserve, the second largest tropical forest in the Americas, and the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, the second largest for est in Nicaragua (2), both protected areas that shelter endemic and threatened species (3). In 2019, Nicaragua signed the Escazú Agreement, a transnational pact pledging public participation and access to information to ensure environmental jus...

Longitudinal analysis of post-acute chikungunya-associated arthralgia in children and adults: A prospective cohort study in Managua, Nicaragua (2014 –2018)

Warnes, Fausto Andres Bustos Carrillo, Jose Victor Zambrana, Brenda Lopez Mercado, Sonia Arguello, Oscarlette Ampi é, Damaris Collado, Nery Sanchez, Sergio Ojeda, Guillermina Kuan, Aubree Gordon, Angel Balmaseda, Eva Harris Chikungunya can result in debilitating arthralgia, often presenting as acute, self-limited pain, but occasionally manifesting chronically. Little is known about differences in chikungunya-associated arthralgia comparing children to adults over time. To characterize long-term chikungunya-associated arthralgia, we recruited 770 patients (105 0 –4 year old [y/o] children, 200 5–9 y/o, 307...

Biogeography of Greater Antillean freshwater fishes, with a review of competing hypotheses
Biol Rev Camb Philos Soc. 2024 Jan 11. doi: 10.1111/brv.13050. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn biogeography, vicariance and long-distance dispersal are often characterised as competing scenarios. However, they are related concepts, both relying on collective geological, ecological, and phylogenetic evidence. This is illustrated by freshwater fishes, which may immigrate to islands either when freshwater connections are temporarily present and later severed (vicariance), or by unusual means when ocean gaps are crossed (long-distance dispersal). Marine barriers have a strong filtering effect on freshwater fishes, limiting im...

Pharmacological Treatment For Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Availability And Access In Latin America And The Caribbean
The management of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) includes pharmacological and surgical strategies to control symptoms and increase survival. Current management guidelines provide recommendations about these strategies; however, their availability may be limited in different regions of the world. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Failure)

Enduring association between irritable bowel syndrome and war trauma during the Nicaragua civil war period: A population-based study
CONCLUSION: An enduring association was observed in the Nicaragua civilian population between specific civil war-related events and subsequent IBS. Civilian populations in regions with extended armed conflict may warrant provider education and targeted interventions for patients.PMID:38130999 | PMC:PMC10731151 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i45.5953 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)
