Cost of Training Crisis: Anaesthetics
This article provides an overview of the average financial cost of training for doctors in the anaesthetic training programme. The cost incurred by anaesthetic trainees illustrates the level of financial burden faced by trainees across multiple specialities. The cost includes: student loan repayment (with interest rates), compulsory membership fees (including the Royal College of Anaesthetists and General Medical Council), postgraduate examinations (Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetist exams are compulsory to complete training) and medical indemnity. The average trainee spends between 5.6% and 7.4% of their annu...

Semi ‐supervised Gaussian mixture modelling with a missing‐data mechanism in R
We presentgmmsslm, anR package for estimating the Bayes' classifier from such partially classified data in the case where the feature vector has a multivariate Gaussian (normal) distribution in each of the pre-defined classes. Our package implements a recently proposed Gaussian mixture modelling framework that incorporates a missingness mechanism for the missing labels in which the probability of a missing label is represented via a logistic model with covariates that depend on the entropy of the feature vector. Under this framework, it has been shown that the accuracy of the Bayes' classifier formed from the Gaussian mixt...

Histopathological and statistical study of corneal repair in rabbits. A new way to understand corneal recovery
This study was conducted using a formula that combines histologic data categorizing their presence and/or type as beneficial for corneal repair. No statistically significant differences were found between the experimental and control eyes regarding all clinical signs and OCT measurements. However, a linear model using histopathological results showed a period-implant mode interaction with statistical significance (p=0.010). The use of the single-layer amniotic membrane resulted in improved corneal recovery with the stromal side showing better performance in the first week and the epithelial side proving to be more effectiv...

Management of patients with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma in Australia and New Zealand: Australian and New Zealand Children's Haematology/Oncology Group position statement
Med J Aust. 2024 May 3. doi: 10.5694/mja2.52295. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The main mission of the Australian and New Zealand Children's Haematology and Oncology Group (ANZCHOG) is to develop and facilitate local access to the world's leading evidence-based clinical trials for all paediatric cancers, including brain tumours, as soon as practically possible. Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) - a subset of a larger group of tumours now termed diffuse midline glioma, H3K27-altered (DMG) - are paediatric brain cancers with less than 10% survival at two years. In the absence of any proven curative ther...

Venturing outside: Local journeying, belonging and new parenthood
Health Place. 2024 May 2;87:103261. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103261. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe transition to parenthood is a transformative journey marked by numerous adjustments, presenting both physical and mental health challenges. Recognising the crucial role of a sense of belonging for parental health in this transition, this study delves into the experiences of new parents, exploring the act of "journeying" within their local geographies. Through analysis of an online survey among new parents in suburban Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, this study highlights the multifaceted role of journeying, not on...
