A comparison of content from across contemporary Australian population health surveys
CONCLUSIONS: Identifying the relationship between place and health in Australia is made more difficult by inconsistencies in information collected across surveys deployed in different regions in Australia.IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Public health research investigating place and health involves a vast and inconsistent patchwork of information within and across states, which may impact broad-scale research questions. The tools developed here assist public health researchers to identify surveys suitable for their research queries related to place and health.PMID:38749164 | DOI:10.1016/j.anzjph.2024.100152 (Source: Austra...

A calibrated data ‐driven approach for small area estimation using big data
SummaryWhere the response variable in a big dataset is consistent with the variable of interest for small area estimation, the big data by itself can provide the estimates for small areas. These estimates are often subject to the coverage and measurement error bias inherited from the big data. However, if a probability survey of the same variable of interest is available, the survey data can be used as a training dataset to develop an algorithm to impute for the data missed by the big data and adjust for measurement errors. In this paper, we outline a methodology for such imputations based on ank-nearest neighbours (kNN) a...

Preventing postnatal depression in new mothers using telephone peer support: protocol for the DAISY (Depression and AnxIety peer Support studY) multi-centre randomised controlled trial
Introduction Postnatal depression affects up to one in six new mothers in Australia each year, with significant impacts on the woman and her family. Prevention strategies can be complicated by a woman’s reluctance to seek professional help. Peer support is a promising but inadequately tested early intervention. Very few trials have reported on the efficacy of peer support in the perinatal period and no study has been undertaken in Australia. We will explore if proactive telephone-based peer (mother-to-mother) support, provided to women identified as being at high risk of postnatal depression, impacts on clinically si...

Treat and release: an observational study of non-conveyed high-acuity dispatches in a Danish emergency medical system
The objective of the study was to assess admission to hospital and mortality in non-conveyed patients. This population-based cohort study included all high-acuity dispatches in Region Zealand, Denmark between 2019 and 2022. The primary outcome was admission within 48  h, and the secondary outcome was 30-day mortality. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted, and logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. A non-conveyance rate of 14% was identified in 95,238 transports. Admission within 48 h was s een in 22% of non-conveyed patients vs. 95% in conveyed patie...

Follow-up after major traumatic injury: a survey of services in Australian and New Zealand public hospitals
Increased survival from traumatic injury has led to a higher demand for follow-up care when patients are discharged from hospital. It is currently unclear how follow-up care following major trauma is provided ... (Source: BMC Health Services Research)

Cardiovascular outcomes for people hospitalised with COVID-19 in Australia, and the effect of vaccination: an  observational cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Although troponin levels were elevated in a considerable proportion of people hospitalised with COVID-19, clinical cardiovascular events were infrequent, and their likelihood was not influenced by vaccination. COVID-19 vaccination, however, was associated with reduced likelihood of in-hospital death and intubation.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12620000486921 (prospective).PMID:38741458 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.52307 (Source: Medical Journal of Australia)

Care, connection, and social distancing: The challenges of baby loss during the COVID-19 pandemic in Aotearoa New Zealand
CONCLUSION: Social isolation is an added challenge for parents experiencing baby loss during a pandemic, which may be mitigated by flexible and compassionate care from healthcare professionals, especially continuity of care midwives.PMID:38744163 | DOI:10.1016/j.wombi.2024.101622 (Source: Women Birth)

Transgender and gender diverse people with endometriosis: A perspective on affirming gynaecological care
Womens Health (Lond). 2024 Jan-Dec;20:17455057241251974. doi: 10.1177/17455057241251974.ABSTRACTTransgender and gender diverse people presumed female at birth experience gynaecological conditions, such as chronic pelvic pain at elevated rates, estimated to impact between 51% and 72% of this population, compared to rates of up to 26.6% in cisgender women. The negative impact of these conditions is likely amplified due to limited access to safe and affirming healthcare. Despite this high prevalence rate, there is limited research investigating the prevalence, presentation or management options for trans and gender diverse pe...
