Transplant Nephrectomy: A Comparative Study of Timing and Techniques in a Single Institution
CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that TN can be performed with relatively low morbidity. However, early TN remains the only independent risk factor for developing adverse outcomes.PMID:38711249 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.942252 (Source: Annals of Transplantation)

Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy in patients aged 75 years or older - comparing the risk of complications with their younger counterparts
CONCLUSIONS: Selected patients ≥ 75 years can undergo RAPN without a significantly increased risk of postoperative complications. However, a mortality rate of 3% in this age group indicates that these patients are frail when postoperative complications occur.PMID:38714631 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02751-5 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Semi-simultaneous hand-assisted laparoscopic (HAL) bilateral nephrectomy and kidney transplantation from the same incision in ADPKD, first case report in Saudi Arabia
J Surg Case Rep. 2024 May 2;2024(5):rjae274. doi: 10.1093/jscr/rjae274. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTThis case report discusses the management of a 46-year-old male patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and a high body mass index, who underwent a semi-simultaneous procedure involving hand-assisted laparoscopic bilateral nephrectomy to alleviate severe abdominal symptoms and prepare for a kidney transplantation, all using the same incision. This is the first reported occurrence of such a procedure in Saudi Arabia. Post-operatively, the patient made a successful recovery with excellent kidney function and...

Real-World Impact of Upfront Cytoreductive Nephrectomy in Metastatic Non-Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Treated with First-Line Immunotherapy Combinations or Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (A Sub-Analysis from the ARON-1 Retrospective Study)
ConclusionsOur study demonstrates the survival benefits of upfront CN compared with systemic therapy without CN. The study suggests that the use of IO+TKI combination or, eventually, TKI monotherapy might be a better choice than IO+IO combination for patients who are not candidates for CN regardless of IO eligibility. Prospective trials are needed to validate these findings and refine the role of CN in current mRCC management. (Source: Targeted Oncology)

Development and validation of a multicenter Cox regression model to predict all-cause mortality in patients with renal masses suspicious for renal cancer
CONCLUSIONS: For patients with localized renal masses, accurate determination of life expectancy is essential for decision-making regarding intervention vs. active surveillance as a primary treatment modality. We have made available a simple tool for this purpose.PMID:38704319 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.04.007 (Source: Ann Oncol)

Clinicopathologic Spectrum and Outcomes of Infections Diagnosed on Graft Biopsies and Nephrectomy in Live Renal Allograft Recipients: An Institutional Experience
CONCLUSIONS: BK polyoma virus infection was the most common infection affecting the renal allograft in our study. Although fungal infections caused the highest mortality among our patients, bacterial graft pyelonephritis was responsible for maximum graft failure. Correctly identifying infections on histology is important so that graft and patient life can be prolonged.PMID:38695589 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0200 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)

Comparison of the perioperative outcomes of robot-assisted laparoscopic transperitoneal versus retraperitoneal partial nephrectomy for posterior-lateral renal tumors: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractThe study aims to assess the available literature and compare the perioperative outcomes of robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) for posterior-lateral renal tumors using transperitoneal (TP) and retroperitoneal (RP) approaches. Systematically searched the Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases for literature. Eligible studies were those that compared TP-RAPN and RP-RAPN for posterior-lateral renal tumors. The data from the included studies were analyzed and summarized using Review Manager 5.3, which involved comparing baseline patient and tumor characteristics, intraoperative and postoperative outcom...
