Bioaccessible metals in dust materials from non-sulfide Zn deposit and related hydrometallurgical operation
Chemosphere. 2023 Oct 20:140498. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140498. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMining and processing of ores in arid (desert) areas generates high amounts of dust, which might be enriched in potentially harmful elements. We studied dust fractions of ores, soils, and technological materials from mining and related hydrometallurgical operation at former Skorpion Zinc non-sulfide Zn deposit in southern Namibia (closed and placed under maintenance in 2020). Chemical and mineralogical investigation was combined with oral bioaccessibility testing of fine dust fractions (<48 μm and <10 μm) in simul...

Prevalence and correlates of pre-diabetes in Sub-Saharan Africa using Demographic and Health Survey Data: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions The prevalence of pre-diabetes was 18.7% in Namibia and 70.1% in South Africa. Correlates of pre-diabetes differed between the two countries with rural residents having higher odds of pre-diabetes in Namibia and urban residents with higher odds in South Africa. Aggressive interventions, including population level education and awareness programmes, and individual level education and lifestyle interventions that account for country-specific contextual factors are urgently needed to prevent progression to diabetes. Patterns of adverse childhood experiences and their associations with mental distress, substance use and sexual risk behaviors in Sub-Saharan Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Discrete clusters of co-occurring ACEs are associated with elevated odds of mental distress among females, and mental distress and substance use among males. Preventing ACEs may improve mental health among young women and men in LMICs in Sub-Saharan Africa.PMID:37806930 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106494 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Childbirth-choice facilitation experiences among women in selected public healthcare facilities in Namibia
CONCLUSIONS: Women who gave birth in public hospitals reported a lack of choice regarding type of childbirth and a lack of shared decision-making. They would have preferred to receive balanced information about types of childbirth in advance in order to make informed decisions.IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Health professionals need to provide information on types of childbirth to women early in antenatal care so that they understand the choices and can give informed consent regarding their chosen mode when the time comes. Previous experiences of women need to be solicited to guide the facilitation of current or subsequent pre...

News at a glance: China ’s S & T clusters, abundant fairy circles, and Arecibo ’s next chapter
BIOGEOGRAPHY Fairy circles abound in dry regions of many countries Mysterious patches of vegetation called fairy circles are well documented in the drylands of Australia and Namibia. Now, a study that combines machine learning and satellite images that span the continents reports examples in 13 other countries, mainly in Africa . Many of the 263 sites identified—in the Sahara and Madagascar, for example—have never before been recorded by scientists. Fairy circles consist of a ring of tall grass surrounding a patch of bare soil up to 12 meters in diameter. Researchers have attributed th...
