Genome-wide variation in the Angolan Namib Desert reveals unique pre-Bantu ancestry
Sci Adv. 2023 Sep 22;9(38):eadh3822. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adh3822. Epub 2023 Sep 22.ABSTRACTAncient DNA studies reveal the genetic structure of Africa before the expansion of Bantu-speaking agriculturalists; however, the impact of now extinct hunter-gatherer and herder societies on the genetic makeup of present-day African groups remains elusive. Here, we uncover the genetic legacy of pre-Bantu populations from the Angolan Namib Desert, where we located small-scale groups associated with enigmatic forager traditions, as well as the last speakers of the Khoe-Kwadi family's Kwadi branch. By applying an ancestry decomposition ...

Prehistoric artists carved incredibly lifelike animal tracks
A rocky basin in the mountains of western Namibia hosts an ancient art gallery. Thousands of years ago, prehistoric hunter-gatherers used the basin’s sandstone as a canvas for a massive collection of engravings, including hundreds of human and animal footprints. The carvings are so detailed and realistic that even today, Indigenous tracking experts can identify nearly all the species depicted, as well as their sex and approximate age . The identifications are an “impressive and thought-provoking” contribution to our understanding of prehistoric rock art, says Gary Haynes, an anthropologist at t...

Service-seeking behaviors among male victims of violence in five African countries: The effects of positive and adverse childhood experiences
CONCLUSION: These findings contribute to limited research on service-seeking behaviors among men and boys. While some parent-youth relationship factors were associated with higher odds of service-seeking, the outcome remained rare. Age and gender-related barriers should be addressed where post-violence care services are offered.PMID:37704546 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106452 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Exploring the nexus of water insecurity and psychological distress in Windhoek's informal settlements, Namibia
J Water Health. 2023 Aug;21(8):1051-1063. doi: 10.2166/wh.2023.076.ABSTRACTWater insecurity has long been a pressing issue, particularly in the informal settlements of Windhoek. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between water insecurity and residents' psychological distress in Windhoek's informal settlements. The study draws upon secondary data collected by Future Resilience for African Cities and Lands in 2017. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to establish the relationship between water insecurity, psychological distress, and three manifest variables (source of income, housing type, and household...
