High detection frequency and genetic diversity of porcine circovirus 3 (PCV-3) in Namibian backyard farms and warthogs
Acta Trop. 2023 Nov 26:107085. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.107085. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince its first identification in 2015, porcine circovirus 3 (PCV-3) has been reported worldwide with a high frequency and in the presence of several clinical conditions, although its impact on pig health and productivity is still debated. Data on the presence of PCV-3 in Africa are, however, limited. A previous study performed on commercial pigs in Namibia failed to identify the pathogen. In the present study, the viral circulation in backyard farms, characterised by lower biosecurity measures and frequent animal exchange ...

Approaches for measuring cumulative childhood adversity: A study of youth from 5 sub-Saharan African countries
CONCLUSIONS: The challenges operationalizing CCA warrant continued research to ensure adversity type, severity, and context lead to validly assessing ACEs impact on child wellbeing.PMID:37996356 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106542 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Parental absence as an adverse childhood experience among young adults in sub-Saharan Africa
CONCLUSION: The observed association between parental absence and poor mental health suggests that this experience has significant adverse consequences and merits consideration as an ACE.PMID:37993366 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106556 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Analysis of the Breast Cancer Journey in Namibia
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study of 405 Namibian residents with BC, marked racial disparities in survival were paralleled by inequities all along the BC journey. To improve BC survival, interventions are needed to promote earlier diagnosis in Black Namibian women and to increase MT initiation and completion in all women.PMID:37921764 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.41402 (Source: Cancer Control)

A multi-country analysis of fatherhood onset and father-child coresidency in Southern Africa
Afr J Reprod Health. 2023 Oct 31;27(10):81-92. doi: 10.29063/ajrh2023/v27i10.7.ABSTRACTFather's involvement in positive childhood development is evident. Previous studies have shown how paternal presence in the home provides a layer of protection for the wellbeing of their children. Our study aimed to establish the prevalence of father-child coresidency among young fathers in Southern Africa. The relationship between the age of fatherhood and father-child coresidency was also investigated. Our study is a cross-sectional investigation using pooled data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) men's recode (MR) files of ...
