Mistletoe and Immunomodulation: Insights and Implications for Anticancer Therapies.
Authors: Oei SL, Thronicke A, Schad F Abstract In early tumor development, cancer cells develop a plethora of strategies to escape surveillance from the adaptive and innate immune system. Cancer immunotherapies, in particular immune checkpoint inhibitors, are becoming a highly promising cancer therapeutic approach that has remarkable increased progress in combating various cancer types. Unfortunately, their mechanisms of action induce some complications, such as inflammatory reactions and immune-related adverse events. In the management of side effects during anticancer therapy, complementary and integrati...

Biochemical and morphological changes in mouse liver induced by mistletoe toxins.
The objective of this study was to investigate short-term effects (up to 48 h) of mistletoe toxins on mouse hepatocytes. Standardized mistletoe extract Iscador P was given to female mice as a single injection (0.1 mg/kg b.w., 1 mg/kg b.w., or 2 mg/kg b.w). Activities of lysosomal hydrolases: acid phosphatase, cathepsins D and L, N-acetyl-β-D-hexosaminidase, β-D-glucuronidase, β-D-glucosidase and cytosolic proteases: arginine and leucine aminopeptidases were analyzed in the liver fractions 24 and 48 h after the injection. The morphology of hepatocytes was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. ...

The Pulse-Respiration Quotient: A Powerful but Untapped Parameter for Modern Studies About Human Physiology and Pathophysiology
This study only analyzed the PRQ phases that showed a constant PRQ over a specific period (frequency coupling) and also a phase entrainment between HR and RR (phase coupling) during this time. During sleep, a complex correlation between the HR and the RR is evident with the PRQ capturing one specific aspect. In a study investigating the N-rs-PRQ with a detailed division of the sleep stages (five stages), Zerm et al. (2008) showed that there is a positive correlation between the N-rs-PRQ and the sleep depth, i.e., the higher the depth of sleep, the lower the N-rs-PRQ. In this study, sleep depth was defined according...

Long-term survival of a patient with advanced pancreatic cancer under adjunct treatment with Viscum album extracts: A case report.
CONCLUSION: We present the case of a patient with aPC with R1-resection with development of liver metastasis during the course of treatment who showed an overall survival of 63 mo and a relapse-free survival of 39 mo under increasing VAE therapy. The possible synergistic effect on tumor control of RFA treatment and immune-stimulatory effects of VAE should be further investigated.
