Clinical outcomes of root coverage using porcine-derived collagen matrix with modified coronally advanced tunnel technique (MCAT) in multiple gingival recessions in smokers — a randomized controlled clinical trial
ConclusionPDCM showed good predictable results in terms of all RC parameters compared to SCTG and thus may be used as a predictable alternative to SCTG for RC in smokers.Clinical significancePDCM can be used as a potential alternative to gold standard subepithelial connective tissue graft in smokers with better patient compliance. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 11024: Clinical and Aesthetic Outcomes of Multiple Gingival Recessions Coverage with Modified Coronally Advanced Tunnel and Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft in Maxilla and Mandible: A 2-Year Retrospective Study
ski Limited long-term data are available when analyzing gingival recession coverage between the maxillary and mandibular sites. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of location (maxilla versus mandible) of multiple gingival recessions on 24 months clinical and aesthetic outcomes of modified coronally advanced tunnel with subepithelial connective tissue graft. Forty patients with multiple gingival recessions (GR) located at maxillary or mandibular teeth were treated between January 2018 and December 2019. Reduction in GR, average root coverage (ARC), complete root coverage (CRC), increase in ke...

The Validity of MCAT Scores in Predicting Students’ Performance and Progress in Medical School: Results From a Multisite Study
Conclusions These data demonstrate that MCAT scores add value to the prediction of medical student performance and progress and that applicants from different backgrounds who enter medical school with similar ranges of MCAT scores and UGPAs perform similarly in the curriculum. A Generalizable Approach to Predicting Performance on USMLE Step 2 CK
CONCLUSION: This model is highly generalizable and enables medical educators to predict student performance on Step 2 CK in the absence of Step 1 quantitative data as early as the end of the first year of medical education with increasingly stronger predictions as students progressed through the clerkship year.PMID:36039184 | PMC:PMC9419904 | DOI:10.2147/AMEP.S373300 (Source: Adv Data)

Recession coverage using the modified coronally advanced tunnel and connective tissue graft with or without enamel matrix derivative: 5-year results of a randomised clinical trial
ConclusionTreatment of single and multiple RT 1 and 2 recessions by means of MCAT and CTG with or without EMD yielded comparable clinical improvements which could be maintained over a period of 5  years. The additional use of EMD did not influence the clinical outcomes.Clinical relevanceThe use of MCAT  + CTG yielded successful coverage of single and multiple RT 1 and 2 gingival recessions, while the additional application of EMD did not seem to influence the results. Treatment of multiple adjacent RT 1 gingival recessions with the modified coronally advanced tunnel (MCAT) technique and a collagen matrix or palatal connective tissue graft: 9-year results of a split-mouth randomized clinical trial
ConclusionThe present results indicate that (a) treatment of MAGR using MCAT in conjunction with either CM or CTG is likely to show a relapse over a period of 9  years, and (b) the outcomes obtained in maxillary areas seem to be more stable compared to the mandibular ones.Clinical relevanceThe mean root coverage at 12  months could not be fully maintained over 9 years. On a long-term basis, the results seem to be less stable in the mandible as compared to maxillary areas. (Source: Clinical Oral Investigations)

Commentary: A New Double-Blinded Study: The Residency Application Process
We have all been raised on quantitative metrics. Advanced classes, a high grade point average (GPA), and stellar SAT scores are needed to obtain entry into top tier colleges. A superb science GPA and competitive Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score are required for admission to medical school. Top United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) scores are essential to be considered for sought after residency positions. What does one do when those quantitative metrics utilized for decades to guide the next generation are suddenly made obsolete? Taking it a step further, how should these applicants now be evaluated, when...

Relationships between preadmission variables and academic outcomes for postbaccalaureate students in medical school
This study was designed to address this issue. Admissions data, preclerkship course performance and United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 results were analyzed over three years for University of California, San Diego (UCSD) postbaccalaureate premedical (PBPM) students (n = 25), students who participated in other postbaccalaureate programs (n = 34), and for the remainder of the medical students who did not participate in any postbaccalaureate programs (n = 329). UCSD PBPM program alumni did not significantly differ in their cumulative academic performance on exams in preclerkship courses and USMLE Step 1 pass ...

Modified coronally advanced tunnel versus epithelialized free gingival graft technique in gingival phenotype modification: a comparative randomized controlled clinical trial
ConclusionsBoth techniques were successful in terms of gingival phenotype modification in the anterior mandible. Additional GT increase, RC, and patient-based outcomes favored MCAT, though KT change proved greater with FGG.Clinical relevanceClinicians may choose MCAT for higher GT increase whereas FGG for more KTC.Trial registration number: NCT04690140 and date: 12/26/2020. Wy’east: An Innovative, Culturally Responsive Postbaccalaureate Pathway for American Indians and Alaska Natives
Problem American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs) face significant health disparities that are exacerbated by limited access to high-quality, culturally congruent health care providers. There are no premedical postbaccalaureate programs focused on AIAN students. Approach The Northwest Native American Center of Excellence designed the Wy’east Pathway in 2018 to increase the number of AIANs matriculating to U.S. medical schools by supporting those on the cusp of matriculation. Wy’east scholars undertake 10 months of structured programming to augment their academic preparation, improve their Medical College A...

Growth in basic science knowledge in first-year medical school and USMLE Step 1 results: a longitudinal investigation at one school
ConclusionsOur study found students had heterogeneous growth patterns in progress test results in their first year of medical school. Growth patterns were highly predictive of USMLE step 1 results. This study can provide performance benchmarks for our future students to assess their progress and for medical educators to identify students who need support and guidance.
