Poor policy and inadequate regulation of medical technology is driving low-value care in Australia's private health system
Aust Health Rev. 2024 Mar 28. doi: 10.1071/AH24006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMillions of Australians use the private health system every year. They should receive safe, high-quality, value-based care. However, poor policy and inadequate regulation of medical technology is driving low-value care at great expense to consumers and the broader health system. Key drivers include the Prescribed List of Medical Devices and Human Tissue, gaps in quality and safety controls for devices being used, and marketing and conflicts of interest. All of these should be addressed to reduce low-value care in Australia's private health sy...

An emerging zoonosis: molecular detection of multidrug-methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus from butchers ’ knives, livestock products and contact surfaces
This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, molecular detection, and antibiogram of the MRSA strain in fresh beef, contact surfaces, and butchers ’ knives from the four major abattoirs (Karu, Gwagwalada, Deidei, and Kubwa) located in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to collect 400 swab samples from butchers’ knives (132), fresh beef (136), and contact surfaces (132). Presumptive colonies on mannitol salt agar were subjected to culture, isolation, and biotyping. The antibiogram was carried out via a Kirby-Bauer disk containing eight antibiotics. MRSA was phenotypicall...

Case report: Envafolimab causes local skin necrosis
Envafolimab is a Chinese domestic innovative fusion of a humanized single-domain programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibody (dAb) and human immunoglobulin IgG1 crystalline fragment (Fc) developed for subcutaneous injections. It was granted conditional market authorization by the China National Medical Product Administration (NMPA) in December 2021. Envafolimab is used to treat adult patients with previously treated microsatellite instability—high (MSI-H) or deficient mismatch repair (dMMR) advanced solid tumors, including patients with advanced colorectal cancer disease progression who were previously administered fluoro...

What Attributes of Integrated Health Care for Mental Health Are the Most Important to Potential Consumers? A Relative Ranking Study
AbstractIntegrated health care (IHC) is efficacious, cost-effective, and more attractive to some consumers than traditional standalone psychotherapy, but the specific characteristics of IHC that drive this enhanced attraction have yet to be explored among potential future mental health consumers. As such, this brief report documents the results of a survey of 428 US adults who were asked to rank order the relative personal importance of seven characteristics (e.g., self-stigma mitigation, prompt appointment, saving money). These seven characteristics have been characterized in the IHC literature as potential beneficial ele...

In Vitro and In Vivo Methods for Analysis of Nanoparticles' Potential to  Induce Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity Reactions
Methods Mol Biol. 2024;2789:193-207. doi: 10.1007/978-1-0716-3786-9_20.ABSTRACTDelayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reactions are among the common reasons for drug withdrawal from clinical use during the post-marketing stage. Several in vivo methods have been developed to test DTH responses in animal models. They include the local lymph node assay (LLNA) and local lymph node proliferation assay (LLNP). While LLNA is instrumental in testing topically administered formulations (e.g., creams), the LLNP was proven to be predictive of drug-mediated DTH in response to small molecule pharmaceuticals. Global efforts in reducing the...
