Cardiac Surgery and Small Island States: A Bridge Too Far?
CONCLUSIONS: SIDS have limited availability of cardiac surgery but pressing clinical needs. Independent cardiac centers exist with acceptable outcomes and lower costs than foreign treatment, suggesting the need to strengthen regionalization models to deliver cardiac surgical care in SIDS. An empirical analysis of the non-linear impacts of ICT-trade openness on renewable energy transition, energy efficiency, clean cooking fuel access and environmental sustainability in South Asia.
Abstract Energy security and environmental sustainability have become an integral policy agenda worldwide whereby the global economic growth policies are being restructured to ensure the reliability of energy supply and safeguard environmental well-being as well. However, technological inefficiency is one of the major hindrances in attaining these over-arching goals. Hence, this paper probed into the non-linear impacts of ICT trade on the prospects of undergoing renewable energy transition, improving energy use efficiencies, enhancing access to cleaner cooking fuels, and mitigating carbon dioxide emission...

Association of Infant and Child Feeding Index with Undernutrition in Children Aged 6-59 months: A Cross-Sectional Study in the Maldives.
This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of undernutrition and its association with infant and child feeding index (ICFI). This cross-sectional study was conducted among children (younger than5 years) and their mothers from Lhaviyani Atoll, Maldives. The data were obtained by interviewing the children's mothers via pretested questionnaires. Infant and child feeding index scores were calculated from the dietary information. Weight-for-age z-scores (WAZ), length/height-for-age z-scores (LAZ/HAZ), and weight-for-length/height z-scores were calculated from anthropometric data taken according to the WHO criterion. Linear regr...

Prevalence of mental disorders in South Asia: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Authors: Hossain MM, Purohit N, Sultana A, Ma P, McKyer ELJ, Ahmed HU Abstract Mental disorders are highly prevalent in eight South Asian countries, yet there is a gap of a synthesized overview of the prevalence of mental disorders in this region. This umbrella review aims to summarize the prevalence of mental disorders from systematic reviews and meta-analyses of South Asian studies. A systematic search of 11 major databases and additional sources was conducted until December 11, 2019. Articles were included if they were systematic reviews or meta-analyses, reported the prevalence of mental disorders, and...

JCL roundtable: South Asian atherosclerotic risk
South Asian risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) has received special emphasis in the 2018 US AHA/ACC/Multisociety Cholesterol Guidelines. The term “South Asian” refers specifically to the countries of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Maldives and to the worldwide diaspora of families from these countries. With this definition, approximately 25% of the world's population is South Asian, but about 50% of ASCVD occur s in this group. In this JCL Roundtable, we discuss the roles of visceral adiposity, diabetes, and features of the metabolic syndrome; lipoprotein(a); and diet an...

Host identity and symbiotic association affects the taxonomic and functional diversity of the clownfish-hosting sea anemone microbiome.
Abstract All eukaryotic life engages in symbioses with a diverse community of bacteria that are essential for performing basic life functions. In many cases, eukaryotic organisms form additional symbioses with other macroscopic eukaryotes. The tightly linked physical interactions that characterize many macroscopic symbioses create opportunities for microbial transfer, which likely affects the diversity and function of individual microbiomes, and may ultimately lead to microbiome convergence between distantly related taxa. Here, we sequence the microbiomes of five species of clownfish-hosting sea anemones t...

Global dynamic spatiotemporal pattern of seasonal influenza since 2009 influenza pandemic
ConclusionsInfluenza seasonality is not predictable in some temperate countries, and it is distinct in Chile, Argentina and South Africa, implying that the optimal timing for influenza vaccination needs to be chosen with caution in these unpredictable countries. Zygosaccharomyces seidelii sp. nov. a new yeast species from the Maldives, and a revisit of the single-strain species debate.
Abstract Zygosaccharomyces seidelii, a new species in the genus Zygosaccharomyces is described. The description of the species is based on a single strain that was isolated from flowers collected on the Maldives. On this occasion, the description of yeast species from single strains was revisited. Sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the nuclear large subunit rRNA gene revealed that Z. seidelii is closely related to Z. gambellarensis. Both species differ by 2.6% (one indel of 7 bp and 9 substitutions) in the D1/D2 domain, 71 substitutions and 23 indels in the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) region and by several...

Comparative Analysis of Prescription Drug Prices in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Countries
ConclusionPrices of selected drugs varied markedly in SAARC countries. After adjusting for GDP, drug prices became more polarized across countries, with Nepal featuring the highest prices. In determining drug prices, the country’s GDP and the population’s purchasing power need to be taken into account. (Source: Value in Health Regional Issues)

Two cases of dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) infection in a Japanese couple returning from Maldives in the dengue outbreak in 2018.
Abstract Annually, more than 1.2 million travelers from other countries visit Maldives for sightseeing, business and honeymoons. In 2018, the largest dengue fever outbreak occurred and more than 3,200 people were affected. During this outbreak, we encountered a newly married Japanese couple returning from Maldives on their honeymoon in October 2018, both of which got infected by dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) during the travel. The number of imported dengue fever cases from Maldives may increase, hence, physicians should keep a sharp watch on up-to-date dengue outbreak information all over the world. ...
