Development of Diabetic retinopathy screening guidelines in South-East Asia region using the context, challenges, and future technology
Conclusions: The DR guidelines for the SEAR region are the first region-specific and resource-aligned recommendations for comprehensive DR care in each country of the region. In the future, the new technological advances in retinal camera technology, teleophthalmology, and artificial intelligence should be included within the structure of the public DR care system.PMID:34003720 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2021.1925308 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas: structures, organization, and services for the management of kidney failure in South Asia
Information about disease burden and the available infrastructure and workforce to care for patients with kidney disease was collected for the second edition of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas. This paper presents findings for the 8 countries in the South Asia region. The World Bank categorizes Afghanistan and Nepal as low-income; Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Pakistan as lower-middle-income; and Sri Lanka and the Maldives as upper-middle-income countries. The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in South Asia ranged from 5.01% to 13.24%. (Source: Kidney International Supplements)

Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in South Asians in the US: A Clinical Perspective from the National Lipid Association
The term South Asian (SA) describes people who trace their ancestry to the Indian subcontinent, i.e., India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, and Nepal (Figure 1). The population of this region is about 1.6 billion (20% of the entire world). SAs have some of the highest rates of coronary heart disease (CHD) among all ethnic groups. There are about 5.4 million SAs in the United States (SAUS) and they represent the fastest growing minority group in the US.1 Indians comprise the vast majority of SAUS (over 80%), followed by people of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin. Coronavirus disease 2019 and dengue: two case reports
ConclusionClinicians must be conscientious when working on the differential diagnosis of possible tropical diseases in cases of coronavirus disease 2019, specifically, when patients develop hemoconcentration, thrombocytopenia, and transaminitis with elevated expression of aspartate higher than alanine transaminase, which is frequently observed in dengue infection. Caution must be taken during the administration of intravenous fluids when treating patients with coronavirus disease 2019 and dengue coinfection, as coronavirus disease 2019 patients are more prone to develop pulmonary edema. Timely diagnosis and appropriate man...

Information and Communication Technology in Schools: Its Contribution to Equitable Speech-Language Therapy Services in an Underserved Small Island Developing State
Conclusions The findings of the study support the potential for using mobile broadband Internet, available ICT devices, and teachers as agents of service delivery in remote schools to enhance speech-language therapy service delivery in the Maldives. The creation of relevant digital educational content for teachers could further support children with communication difficulties in the country. Prevalence of unintended pregnancy and its associated factors: Evidence from six south Asian countries
ConclusionsThis study has showed that women ’s age, wealth index, place of residence, number of children, family size, the intention of contraceptive use, living with a partner, and first cohabitation age are essential determinants of unintended pregnancy. These factors should be considered when trying to reduce unintended pregnancy in six South Asian countries. However, there is a need to improve health education, counselling, skills-building, sex education, modern contraceptive use and its access in this region. Intervention programs regarding reproductive health and policies are warranted to reduce rates of unintended...

Dyslipidemia and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in South Asians: A Review and Discussion of Causes, Challenges and Management Strategies.
CONCLUSIONS: While combined efforts to study the expatriate South Asians in western countries have been able to identify South Asian specific dyslipidemias, causal associations and optimal management remains relatively less explored. Larger scale studies are needed to better quantify the relationship of each lipid parameter with ASCVD risk among South Asians as well as optimal lipid targets and management strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality in this high-risk group. Prevalence of and factors associated with anaemia in women of reproductive age in Bangladesh, Maldives and Nepal: Evidence from nationally-representative survey data
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of and factors associated with anaemia in women of reproductive age in Bangladesh, Maldives, and Nepal. MethodsWe used the nationally-representative Demographic and Health Surveys Program data collected from women of reproductive age (15 –49 years) in 2011 in Bangladesh (n = 5678), 2016 in Maldives (n = 6837), and 2016 in Nepal (n = 6419). Anaemia was categorized as mild (haemoglobin [Hb] of 10.0–10.9 g/dL for pregnant women and 11.0–11.9 g/dL for non-pregnant women), moderate (Hb of 7.0–9.9 g/dL for pregnant women and 8.0– 10.9 g/dL for non-pregnant women), and severe ...

Molecular species delimitation reveals high diversity in the mosquito Anopheles tessellatus Theobald, 1901 (Diptera, Culicidae) across its range.
This study describes the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships among An. tessellatus populations in nine Asian countries at the COI gene using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic inference tree and cluster-based species delimitation approaches. These analyses reveal exceptional levels of genetic diversity in An. tessellatus populations across its known range, and identify up to six putative species in the newly determined Tessellatus Complex. The existence of such cryptic diversity has potentially important consequences for vector management and disease control. Differences in the ecologies and life his...

Factors Influencing Alcohol Use Among Adolescents in South Asia: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSIONS: The distal determinants of alcohol use among adolescents living in South Asia are largely unknown. As adolescent drinking behaviors change in response to social media and industry influence, more evidence is needed to reflect the South Asia context.
