Assessment of distribution and diversity of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the most prevalent Boraginaceae species in Macedonia
Chem Biodivers. 2022 May 17. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202200066. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSystematic study of extraction efficiency of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and corresponding pyrrolizidine alkaloid N -oxides (PANOs) from plant material for subsequent LC-MS analysis was carried out. The optimal extraction was achieved with methanol and one clean up step using SPE C18 column. With the optimized LC-ESI-MS/MS method using ion trap, the distribution and diversity of PAs and PANOs in plant material (leaves, flowers and stems) obtained from wild-growing E. vulgare , E. italicum , S. officinale L., C. creticum and O. heterop...

A new ferulol derivative isolated from the aerial parts of < em > Ferulago nodosa < /em > (L.) Boiss. growing in Sicily (Italy)
Nat Prod Res. 2022 May 13:1-7. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2022.2074995. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerulago nodosa (L.) Boiss. (Apiaceae) is a species occurring in the Balkan-Tyrrhenian area being present in Crete, Greece, Albania, and probably in Macedonia. Although the western disjointed population of Sicily has been classified as an endemic sub-species, F. nodosa subsp. geniculata (Guss.) Troia & Raimondo, it is not officially accepted. From the aerial parts of the Sicilian accession of this species four known metabolites (1-4), and a new ferulol derivative (5), were isolated and characterized. The structure of the ne...

Prevalence of keratoconus in refractive surgery practice population in North Macedonia
ConclusionThe prevalence of KC at a refractive surgery practice in N. Macedonia is much higher compared with general population (6.8/100,000) and similar to the prevalence in Middle East Asia. Nationwide screening programs are needed to diagnose the disease earlier. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Alchemilla viridiflora Rothm.: the potent natural inhibitor of angiotensin I-converting enzyme
Mol Cell Biochem. 2022 Mar 29. doi: 10.1007/s11010-022-04410-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlchemilla viridiflora Rothm., Rosaceae is a herbaceous plant widespread in central Greece, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Serbia with Kosovo. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis leads to the identification of 20 compounds in methanol extract, mainly ellagitannins and flavonoid glycosides. Given that various plant extracts have traditionally been used to treat hypertension and that some of the analyzed methanol extract constituents have beneficial cardiovascular effects, we hypothesized that some of these effects are a...

Detection and molecular characterization of West Nile virus in Culex pipiens mosquitoes in Central Macedonia, Greece, 2019-2021
Acta Trop. 2022 Mar 7:106391. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2022.106391. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince 2010 when West Nile virus (WNV) emerged in Greece, it causes seasonal outbreaks of human infections almost every year. During May-October of 2019-2021 a total number of 51,504 Culex pipiens mosquitoes were trapped in all seven regional units of Central Macedonia in northern Greece. They were grouped into 1099 pools and tested for WNV. The virus was detected in 5% of the mosquito pools (1.5%, 3.6% and 9.6% pools in 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively), with significant rate differences among the regional units and years....

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 3055: Cigarette Smoking among Medical Students from the Western Balkan
vić University student’s smoking is a significant public health problem. It is estimated that, globally, every fifth medical student is a smoker. So far, no research dealing with cigarette smoking among medical students has been conducted in the countries of the Western Balkans. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of cigarette smoking among Western Balkans medical students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2452 students from 14 medical faculties in the Western Balkans (Republic of Slovenia, Republic of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of North Macedoni...

Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Mediterranean Countries According to Rome IV Criteria
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in children of Mediterranean area using Rome IV criteria and to compare the prevalence of FGIDs using Rome IV and Rome III criteria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study enrolling children and adolescents living in Croatia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Macedonia, and Serbia. Subjects were examined in relation to the presence of FGIDs, using the Rome IV criteria. Data were compared with the results of a previous study using Rome III data. Results: We analyzed 1972 children ages 4 to 9 years (gro...

Sex differences in COVID-19 fatality rate and risk of death: An analysis in 73 countries, 2020-2021
We examined the Global Health 50/50 tracks of sex-disaggregated infection and mortality COVID-19 data from 73 countries through May 20, 2021. We compared the infection fatality rate (IFR) in men vs. women and risk of death from COVID-19 by country. Of all cases in 73 countries, 42,933,757 were in women and 40,187,894 in men; 1,274,663 men and 971,899 women died. The IFR was higher in males (3.17%) than in women (2.26%). The IFR in males vs. females varied from country to country, and it was higher in men in Brazil, Yemen, Mexico, Ecuador, Scotland, Peru, Guatemala, North Macedonia and Afghanistan. Overall, men had a higher...
