Pollution impact on metal and biomarker responses in intestinal cytosol of freshwater fish
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Apr 13. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-26844-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present study, essential and nonessential metal content and biomarker responses were investigated in the intestine of fish collected from the areas polluted by mining. Our objective was to determine metal and biomarker levels in tissue responsible for dietary intake, which is rarely studied in water pollution research. The study was conducted in the Bregalnica River, reference location, and in the Zletovska and Kriva Rivers (the Republic of North Macedonia), which are directly influenced by the active mines Zletov...

Clozapine prescription rates in Southeast Europe: A cross-sectional study
DiscussionOur findings suggested that clozapine prescription rate in SEE outpatients is higher than in Western Europe. The average dose is significantly below the optimal therapeutic dosage recommended by clinical guidelines, and clozapine polytherapy is common. This might indicate that clozapine is prescribed mainly for its sedative effect rather than antipsychotic. We hope that this finding will be taken up by relevant stakeholders to address this non-evidence-based practice. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Extraction, Distribution and Diversity of Phenolic Compounds in Most Widespread Boraginaceae Species from Macedonia
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Apr 7:e202201149. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202201149. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA systematic study of extraction efficiency of polyphenolic compounds from the most widespread Boraginaceae species was carried out. The optimal extraction was achieved with 50% (V/V) methanol for phenolic acids and flavonoids, 0.2% (V/V) HCl in 50% (V/V) methanol for anthocyanins and pure water for flavan-3-ols. The distribution and diversity of polyphenolic compounds in plant material obtained from wild-growing Anchusa officinalis, Cynoglossum creticum Mill., Echium vulgare, Echium italicum, and Onosma heterophylla Griseb. s...

Moss as an indicator of rare earth elements across the area of the volcanogenic deposit in the Allchar Locality, North Macedonia
This study provides an overview of the distribution of REEs in moss samples from the area of the volcanogenic As-Sb-Tl deposit of Allchar, North Macedonia. Elemental contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma –mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). From the results, it can be deduced that both the light and heavy REEs have very similar distributions in the study area. Higher contents of these elements were found in moss samples in the southeastern part of the area, where Quaternary Pliocene latite breccias and Qu aternary Pliocene tuffs predominate, indicating the similarity of their distribution in the soils of this ar...

Key lessons learnt from COVID-19 intra-action reviews in the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia 2020-2021: a qualitative study
Conclusions The IARs provided an opportunity for continuous collective reflection and learning with multisectoral engagement. They also offered an opportunity to review public health emergency preparedness and response functions in general, thereby contributing to generic health systems strengthening and resilience beyond COVID-19. However, success in strengthening the response and preparedness requires leadership and resource allocation, prioritisation and commitment by the countries and territories themselves. The chemical composition of the aerial parts essential oil of < em > Ferulago nodosa < /em > (L.) Boiss. (Apiaceae) growing wild in Crete (Greece)
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Feb 10:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2177288. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerulago nodosa (L.) Boiss. (Apiaceae) is a species occurring in the Balkan-Tyrrhenian area being present in Crete, Greece, Albania, and probably in Macedonia. Although the western disjointed population of Sicily has been classified as an endemic sub-species, F. nodosa subsp. geniculata (Guss.) Troia & Raimondo, its official acceptance is quite controversial. In order to verify the existence of two different sub-species, we investigated the chemical composition of the essential oil of F. nodosa, collected in Crete (Greece),...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1055: Pigments and Techniques of Hellenistic Apulian Tomb Painting
a Giannossa The wall paintings of five Hellenistic tombs in Apulia were analysed using a multi-technique approach to discern the painting techniques used and contextualise them within the phenomenon of Hellenistic tomb painting in Southern Italy. In particular, the question was asked whether technical knowledge played a role in the reception of Hellenistic artistic models and whether this knowledge was present locally. Raman and IR spectroscopies were used to identify pigments, colourants, and binders; light and electron microscopy were used to determine the structural characteristics of the paint layers and recognise ...

Identification of a dysfunctional exon-skipping splice variant in GLUT9/SLC2A9 causal for renal hypouricemia type 2
Renal hypouricemia (RHUC) is a pathological condition characterized by extremely low serum urate and overexcretion of urate in the kidney; this inheritable disorder is classified into type 1 and type 2 based on causative genes encoding physiologically-important urate transporters, URAT1 and GLUT9, respectively; however, research on RHUC type 2 is still behind type 1. We herein describe a typical familial case of RHUC type 2 found in a Slovak family with severe hypouricemia and hyperuricosuria. Via clinico-genetic analyses including whole exome sequencing and in vitro functional assays, we identified an intronic GLUT9 varia...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 224: West Nile Virus in Culex Mosquitoes in Central Macedonia, Greece, 2022
s Anna Papa In 2022, Greece was the second most seriously affected European country in terms of the West Nile virus (WNV), after Italy. Specifically, Central Macedonia was the region with the most reported human cases (81.5%). In the present study, 30,816 female Culex pipiens sensu lato mosquitoes were collected from May to September 2022 in the seven regional units of Central Macedonia; they were then grouped into 690 pools and tested for WNV, while next-generation sequencing was applied to the samples, which showed a cycle threshold of Ct < 30 in a real-time RT-PCR test. WNV was detected in 5.9% of pools...
