Prevalence of congenital hypothyroidism in North Macedonia: data from a newborn screening program conducted for twenty years
CONCLUSIONS: The overall CH prevalence is high in North Macedonia, with substantial ethnic and geographical variations. Further analysis to elucidate the causes for the significant variations in the CH prevalence including environmental factors is warranted.PMID:37114688 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2022.594 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)

Pollution impact on metal and biomarker responses in intestinal cytosol of freshwater fish
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Apr 13. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-26844-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present study, essential and nonessential metal content and biomarker responses were investigated in the intestine of fish collected from the areas polluted by mining. Our objective was to determine metal and biomarker levels in tissue responsible for dietary intake, which is rarely studied in water pollution research. The study was conducted in the Bregalnica River, reference location, and in the Zletovska and Kriva Rivers (the Republic of North Macedonia), which are directly influenced by the active mines Zletov...

Clozapine prescription rates in Southeast Europe: A cross-sectional study
DiscussionOur findings suggested that clozapine prescription rate in SEE outpatients is higher than in Western Europe. The average dose is significantly below the optimal therapeutic dosage recommended by clinical guidelines, and clozapine polytherapy is common. This might indicate that clozapine is prescribed mainly for its sedative effect rather than antipsychotic. We hope that this finding will be taken up by relevant stakeholders to address this non-evidence-based practice. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Extraction, Distribution and Diversity of Phenolic Compounds in Most Widespread Boraginaceae Species from Macedonia
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Apr 7:e202201149. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202201149. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA systematic study of extraction efficiency of polyphenolic compounds from the most widespread Boraginaceae species was carried out. The optimal extraction was achieved with 50% (V/V) methanol for phenolic acids and flavonoids, 0.2% (V/V) HCl in 50% (V/V) methanol for anthocyanins and pure water for flavan-3-ols. The distribution and diversity of polyphenolic compounds in plant material obtained from wild-growing Anchusa officinalis, Cynoglossum creticum Mill., Echium vulgare, Echium italicum, and Onosma heterophylla Griseb. s...

Moss as an indicator of rare earth elements across the area of the volcanogenic deposit in the Allchar Locality, North Macedonia
This study provides an overview of the distribution of REEs in moss samples from the area of the volcanogenic As-Sb-Tl deposit of Allchar, North Macedonia. Elemental contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma –mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). From the results, it can be deduced that both the light and heavy REEs have very similar distributions in the study area. Higher contents of these elements were found in moss samples in the southeastern part of the area, where Quaternary Pliocene latite breccias and Qu aternary Pliocene tuffs predominate, indicating the similarity of their distribution in the soils of this ar...
