COVID-19 in transplant recipients: Multicentric report of Mexican experience
CONCLUSIONS: Transplant recipients show a higher fatality rate and complications from SARS-CoV-2 infection; more studies are needed to identify prognostic factors and effective anti-SARS-CoV-2 therapies.PMID:37669570 | DOI:10.24875/ACM.21000113 (Source: Archivos de Cardiologia de Mexico)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1839: Seven Epidemic Waves of COVID-19 in a Hospital in Madrid: Analysis of Severity and Associated Factors
Conclusions: The variables associated with mortality included age, comorbidity, respiratory failure, and inflammation. Differences in the baseline characteristics of admitted patients explained the differences in mortality in each wave. Differences observed between patients admitted in the latest wave and the earlier ones suggest that COVID-19 has evolved into a distinct disease, requiring a distinct approach. (Source: Viruses)

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 4163: Prostate Region-Wise Imaging Biomarker Profiles for Risk Stratification and Biochemical Recurrence Prediction
Conclusions: Prostate region-aware imaging profiles enable identification of patients with worse prognosis and with a higher risk of BCR, retaining higher predictive values when combined with clinical variables. (Source: Cancers)

Cytomegalovirus durably primes neutrophil oxidative burst
J Leukoc Biol. 2023 Aug 12:qiad091. doi: 10.1093/jleuko/qiad091. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCytomegalovirus (CMV) is a ubiquitous herpes virus that infects most humans, thereafter persisting lifelong in tissues of the host. It is a known pathogen in immunosuppressed patients, but its impact on immunocompetent hosts remains less understood. Recent data have shown that CMV leaves a significant and long lasting imprint in host immunity that may confer some protection against subsequent bacterial infection. Such innate immune activation may come at a cost, however, with potential to cause immunopathology. Neutrophils are ce...
