Voluntary Additional Health Insurance in the European Union: Free Market or Regulation?
The objective of this article is to feed the discussion on the question whether and under what conditions free-market-driven additional health insurance in the European Union might be acceptable. We conclude that, provided that basic health insurance effectively covers all essential healthcare (essential healthcare services being broadly defined), additional health insurance could be regulated in the same way as all other non-life insurance. Plasma membrane repair: the adaptable cell life-insurance.
Abstract The plasma membrane is the most basic element necessary for the cell to exist and be distinguishable from its environment. Regulated mechanisms allow tightly controlled communication between intacellular and extracellular medium allowing the maintenance of a specific biochemical environment, optimized for cellular functions. The anarchic and uncontrolled opening of a hole in the PM induces a change in the concentration of ions and oxidizing agents perturbing homeostasis. Fortunately, the cell possesses mechanisms that are capable of reacting to sudden extracellular medium entry and to block the le...

Accurate Predictions of Postmortem Interval Using Linear Regression Analyses of Gene Meter Expression Data
The postmortem interval (PMI) is the elapsed time between death of an organism and the initiation of an official investigation to determine the cause of death. Its prediction is important to civil investigations such as those involving life insurance fraud because investigators need to determine if the person was alive or not when the policy was in effect [1]. The PMI is also important to criminal investigations, especially suspicious death cases where there are no witnesses, because it can help determine the time relationship between a potential suspect and the victim and eliminate people from a suspect list, which speeds...

Pediatric Whole Exome Sequencing: an Assessment of Parents ’ Perceived and Actual Understanding.
AbstractWhole exome sequencing (WES) is an integral tool in the diagnosis of genetic conditions in pediatric patients, but concerns have been expressed about the complexity of the information and the possibility for secondary findings that need to be conveyed to those deciding about WES. Currently, there is no validated tool to assess parental understanding of WES. We developed and implemented a survey to assess perceived and actual understanding of WES in parents who consented to clinical WES for their child between July 2013 and May 2015. Fifty-three eligible surveys were returned (57% response rate). Areas with both low...

Moderation effects of perceived organisational support on curvilinear relationship between neuroticism and job performance
Publication date: 15 January 2017 Source:Personality and Individual Differences, Volume 105 Author(s): Nishant Uppal The relationship between neuroticism and job performance is often assumed to be negative and linear. The current research challenges this assumption conceptually and empirically and tests a curvilinear relation between neuroticism and job performance. Further, the present work also hypothesizes that perceived organisational support (POS) moderates the curvilinear neuroticism-job performance relationships such that the inflection points after which the relationship disappears will be lower for low POS than...

Controversies in hypertension: is lower blood pressure always better?
Since the advent of the sphygmomanometer over a century ago, appreciation of the impact of chronic hypertension has continued to grow. By the early 20th century, life insurance actuaries had quantified the magnitude of the important relationship between blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk; BP   > 140/90  mm Hg signified a doubling of the risk of fatal heart attack compared to a “normal” BP (roughly 120/80 mm Hg). Pathogenesis of hypertension was unknown; in a famous debate published in the Lancet in 1959, Robert Platt summarized the prevailing view that hypertension is a discrete Mendelian ge n...

Living Kidney Donors Information Needs and Preferences
This study revealed limited usefulness of certain CMS-mandated topics and a desire for additional information about donation. Efforts to standardize the informed consent process should incorporate donors’ perspectives as to the specific topics, quantity of information, and the mode of communication found most useful when considering living donation. Volume: 22 Issue: 1
This study reviewed the occurrence of late hematoma in five patients who received smooth, round silicone gel implants in a single-surgeon practice over a 30-year period. All patients presented with progressive enlargement of the involved breast, which appeared to result from multiple and recurrent bouts of bleeding rather than from an isolated event. Histological analysis of capsules provided insight into the pathogenesis of this rare phenomenon.
