Twenty questions from the surgeon to the radiologist to better plan an open partial horizontal laryngectomy
Open partial horizontal laryngectomies (OPHLs) represent a valuable therapeutic option for tumors of the intermediate T-category and, in selected cases, for locally advanced tumors with low-volume extra-laryngeal extension. The eligibility of patients treated with this type of surgery has increased with the introduction of the modular approach to OPHL planning. This strategy follows the introduction of the classification proposed by the European Laryngological Society, based on the extent of horizontal resection. Optimization of the selection is the result of a meticulous work-up process involving close cooperation between...

Treatment strategy in laryngeal chondrosarcoma: a multicenter study of 43 cases
ConclusionThese results suggest that laryngeal preservation should be considered as the initial treatment in cases of laryngeal chondrosarcoma. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Preoperative tracheostomy is associated with thyroid gland invasion and poorer prognosis in laryngectomized patients
ConclusionPreoperative tracheostomy is an independent predictive factor for thyroid gland invasion and has adverse oncological outcomes in laryngectomized patients. Conversely, the rates of thyroid gland invasion are low when tracheostomy was not performed beforehand. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Prophylactic pectoralis major flap to compensate for increased risk of pharyngocutaneous fistula in laryngectomy patients with low skeletal muscle mass (PECTORALIS): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Total laryngectomy (TL) is a surgical procedure commonly performed on patients with advanced laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma. One of the most common postoperative complications following TL is the develo... (Source: BMC Cancer)

Machine learning model to preoperatively predict T2/T3 staging of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer based on the CT radiomic signature
ConclusionsThe nomogram based on the radiomics model derived from contrast-enhanced CT images had good diagnostic performance for distinguishing T2/T3 staging of LHSCC.Clinical relevance statementAccurate T2/T3 staging assessment of LHSCC aids in determining whether laryngectomy or laryngeal preservation therapy should be performed. The nomogram based on the radiomics model derived from contrast-enhanced CT images has the potential to predict the T2/T3 staging of LHSCC, which can provide a non-invasive and robust approach for guiding the optimization of clinical decision-making.Key Points•Combining analysis of variance w...

Pharyngeal reconstruction after total laryngectomy with sliding epiglottis: technical aspects with retrospective review
ConclusionsSliding epiglottoplasty is considered a safe reconstruction technique. Although slightly better outcomes were noted within the epiglottoplasty group, it is still considered inferior to the primary closure. This technique ought to be considered in meticulously selected patients in whom primary closure is not feasible, epiglottis with nearby structures is spared from disease, and when the distal flaps are less appropriate or contraindicated. Analysis of swallowing and voice-related quality of life in patients after supracricoid partial laryngectomy
ConclusionSCPL provides patients with satisfactory swallowing and voice function. The patients in this study were satisfied with their quality of life in terms of swallowing and voice. SCPL can be used as a surgical method to preserve laryngeal function in patients with laryngeal cancer. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)
