Partial Horizontal Supracricoid Laryngectomy: Which Factors Impact on Post-decannulation Swallowing Outcomes? A Prospective Single-Center Experience
AbstractEarly decannulation, performed within the first ten days after supracricoid partial laryngectomy, can result in a more rapid recovery of swallowing function with a semisolid bolus in the short term, about 30  days. We selected 20 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of larynx, who underwent supracricoid laryngectomies: 10 cricohyoidopexy (CHP) and 10 cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (CHEP). Staging was pT2 (10 pts), and pT3 (10 pts). Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing was used to assess postoperat ive swallowing function after a mean of 12 and 22 days from surgery. A modified PAS score (penetration-aspiratio...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 2246: The Incidence and the Risk Factors for Pharyngocutaneous Fistula following Primary and Salvage Total Laryngectomy
dar Aničin The pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) is the most common complication following a total laryngectomy (TL) with a wide range of incidence and various potential risk factors. The aim was to analyse the incidence and potential risk factors for PCF formation in a large study set collected over a longer period of time. In the retrospective study at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery of Ljubljana, 422 patients who were treated for head and neck cancer by TL between 2007 and 2020 were included. The comprehensive clinicopathologic data were collected including potential risk factors relat...

Surgical Management of Advanced Glottic Cancer
Otolaryngol Clin North Am. 2023 Apr;56(2):275-283. doi: 10.1016/j.otc.2022.12.007.ABSTRACTIn advanced glottic cancer, it is widely known that definitive chemoradiation can result in comparable survival outcomes to primary surgery. This deserves consideration given the immense effects total laryngectomy (TL) has on patients. It is important to consider that not all advanced glottic tumors should be treated in the same way, and surgical management remains a critical consideration for optimization of local control and survival outcomes. Advances in organ preservation surgery and the more developed understanding of the surviva...

Cervical Cutaneous Emphysema after Laser Microsurgery for Treatment of Laryngeal Cancer: Case Report
Ear Nose Throat J. 2023 Apr 5:1455613231166584. doi: 10.1177/01455613231166584. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLaser laryngectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that offers advantages such as precise and limited resections, magnification of the surgical field by microscopy, and improved patient outcomes. However, it is not without risks, and intraoperative complications have been reported, including cervical-cutaneous emphysema. This case report presents a rare complication of cervical-cutaneous emphysema after laser laryngectomy occurring in a 57-year-old patient with glottic carcinoma. The patient underwent la...
