Exploring the impact of epidemiological and clinical factors on the progression of canine leishmaniosis by statistical and whole genome analyses: from breed predisposition to comorbidities
Int J Parasitol. 2024 Apr 1:S0020-7519(24)00058-4. doi: 10.1016/j.ijpara.2024.03.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCanine leishmaniosis (CanL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is a complex disease of growing importance in Europe. Clinical manifestations result from the down-modulation of the host immune response through multiple host-parasite interactions. Although several factors might influence CanL progression, this is the first known study evaluating risk factors for its different clinical stages in a large referral hospital population (n=35.669) from an endemic area, over a 20 year period. Genome-wide scans for select...

SLAP Trial: Shock Wave Lithotripsy and Mechanical Percussion Therapy Post ESWL for Renal Calculi
CONCLUSION: This study has shown that MPI can be effectively performed in a home setting without the need for medical supervision and results in improved stone clearance rates post ESWL. The main limitations to the study were the use of X-ray over CT during the follow-up and variability in MPI compliance and administration. Further research is warranted into standardising home MPI protocols. This trial is registered with ANZCTR387061.PMID:38566931 | PMC:PMC10987243 | DOI:10.1155/2024/7870425 (Source: Advances in Urology)

Comparison of safety and efficacy of tubeless vs. conventional mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy in patients with Escherichia coli bacteriuria
AbstractTo evaluate the safety and efficacy of tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in patients with Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteriuria. We conducted a retrospective review of 84 patients with E. coli bacteriuria who underwent PCNL. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether a nephrostomy tube is placed at the end of the procedure. Preoperative clinical data, surgical outcomes, and postoperative complications were compared. Then, regression analysis of factors predicting success rate of PCNL in patients with E. coli bacteriuria was performed. After PCNL, residual fragments  ≤ 4 mm were co...
