SD-OCT analysis in syndromic and non-syndromic forms of retinitis pigmentosa due to USH2A gene mutations
This study aims to analyze macular structure by using SD-OCT in a cohort of patients affected by autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa and Usher syndrome, due to genetic variants in USH2A gene, and to correlate OCT parameters with functional and genetic data. Methods: The subjects of this study were 92 patients, 46 syndromic (Ush2) and 46 non-syndromic (arRP), with clinical and genetic diagnosis of USH2A-related retinal dystrophy, who underwent a complete ophthalmic examination and spectral domain OCT analysis. The study focused on evaluating the differences between the two groups in the following parameters: best corr...

Research Progress on Morphological Changes and Surgery-Related Parameters of Corneal Cap in Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction
Small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is an “all-in-one” surgical method for refractive correction. An advantage of the SMILE over traditional surgery is that it depends on the corneal cap’s design. This review discusses the morphological evaluation of the corneal cap, selection of the corneal cap with different thicknesses and diameter s, influence of the corneal cap design on re-treatment, and management of corneal cap-related complications. The following points should be recognized to define the correct morphology and design of the operation-related parameters of the corneal cap during SMILE: (1) the thickne...

Proinflammatory Cytokine Profile Differences between Primary Open-Angle and Pseudoexfoliative Glaucoma
Conclusion: We conclude that both POAG and PXG show elevated concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines in tear and aqueous humor that could be used as biomarkers for these types of glaucoma and that the concentrations in aqueous humor of three cytokines, IL-12, IL-13, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (monocyte chemotactic and activating factor), could be used to differentiate POAG and PXG. Metabolic Long-Term Monitoring of Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation in Retinitis Pigmentosa
Conclusion: Our long-term observations indicate that TES therapy in RP might lead to a slight increment in oxygen consumption of the retina. However, a larger cohort and longer duration may be needed to adequately power a follow-up study and to confirm this trend reflecting a possible benefit of TES for RP. (Source: Ophthalmic Research)

Trends of Corneal Transplantation in Adults from 2010 to 2019 in East China: A 10-Year Experience
Conclusions: Over the past decade, infectious keratitis and endothelial dysfunction/bullous keratopathy have been the leading indications for keratoplasty in adults. Preferred surgical techniques for keratoplasty have been shifting from PKP to more customized lamellar keratoplasties. (Source: Ophthalmic Research)
