Comparisons of flow dynamics of dual-blade to single-blade beveled-tip vitreous cutters
Introduction: To compare the flow dynamics of the dual-blade to the single-blade beveled-tip vitreous cutters. Methods: The aspiration rates of balanced salt solution (BSS) and swine vitreous were measured for the 25-gauge and 27-gauge dual- and single-blade vitreous cutters. The flow dynamics of BSS and diluted vitreous mixed with fluorescent polymer at the maximal cutting rates and the reflux of BSS were measured in images obtained by a high-speed camera. The distal end of the cutter was defined as the head end. Results: The aspiration rates of BSS and vitreous by the 25- and 27-gauge dual-blade cutters were significan...

Local Immunosuppression in Wuzhishan Pig to Rhesus Monkey Descemet ’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty: An Innovative Method to Promote the Survival of Xenografts
Conclusions: Xenogeneic corneal endothelial grafts can survive and function in rhesus monkey eyes for a prolonged period of time with subconjunctival steroid or topical tacrolimus and steroid treatment. Furthermore, topical drugs are more suitable for clinical use. (Source: Ophthalmic Research)

Local immunosuppression in WZS-pig to rhesus monkey Descemet ’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty: An innovative method to promote the survival of xeno-grafts
Corneal xenotransplantation is an effective solution for the shortage of human corneas. We investigated the feasibility and efficacy of different postoperative protocols on xeno-Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) grafts. Thirty rhesus monkeys were randomly divided into three groups: control group (C), only Descemet's membrane (DM) stripping; DSAEK 1 (D1) and DSAEK 2 (D2) groups, DM stripping followed by endothelial keratoplasty. Betamethasone 3.5 mg was subconjunctival injected in groups control and D1 postoperatively, while animals in group D2 were treated with topical 0.1% tacrolimus and top...

Protector role of intraocular lenses under artificial light conditions
Conclusions: The current in vitro study suggest that UV/blue filtering IOLs are not useful in terms of photoprotection in artificial light conditions. The results obtained indicate that it is needed to give attention to other IOLs parameters besides the type of filter, as it seems they could have influence also protective role. The Association between Myopia and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background: Previous studies identified myopia as a risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). However, recent studies have shown different results, the definitive relationship between myopia and POAG remains controversial. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between myopia and POAG. Methods: Published articles were searched from PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases between 1970 and 2020. A pooled analysis of the ORs was performed using a random-effects model. Results: Data on the association between myopia and POAG, were obtained from 16 cross sectional studies, and the pooled OR was 2.26 (95% confiden...

Macular choroidal thickness: evaluation of variability among measurements and assessment of predictive value of glaucomatous visual field damage
Introduction: To investigate the relationship between the choroidal circulation and glaucoma, assessing macular choroidal thickness (MCT) as a predictive value of glaucomatous visual field damage. Methods: Twenty primary open-angle glaucoma patients were recruited. Patients underwent two SS-OCTs scans: one with DRI OCT (Topcon) and the other with PLEX Elite 9000 (Zeiss). Standard OCT parameters were acquired by DRI OCT, while MCT was manually measured in 5 points on Plex ELITE 9000 images. The relationship among MCT, standard OCT parameters and visual field indices were evaluated. Pearson ’s r correlation was calculated...

Efficacy of fovea-sparing internal limiting membrane peeling for epiretinal membrane foveoschisis
Purpose: To investigate the outcomes of vitrectomy with fovea-sparing internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling (FSIP) for epiretinal membrane foveoschisis based on new optical coherence tomography definitions. Methods: 27 eyes of 28 patients (67.2 ± 10.5 years old) who underwent vitrectomy with FSIP without gas tamponade for epiretinal membrane foveoschisis were included. All patients underwent follow-up examinations for at least 12 months. In the FSIP technique, the ILM is peeled off in a donut shape, preserving the foveal ILM. The logarith m of the minimal angle of resolution best-corrected visual acuity (logMAR BCVA),...

Surveillance of liver function in uveitis with or without chronic HBV infection
Conclusion: Non-infectious uveitis cases with HBcAb positivity have an increased risk of liver damage. This association was predominantly driven by IPPU but was not significant in AU suggesting that the association is mediated by systemic therapy. (Source: Ophthalmic Research)
